I'm just wondering what the difference is between regular diesel and heating oil... besides the red color, is it just ordinary diesel? Or am I wrong about that?
A friend of mine mentioned that you can also use heating oil without any problems. Is that true? Given the injection pressures and the sensitivity of the mechanics, I can't really imagine that there wouldn't be any damage.
Has anyone had any experience with this? For example, with AFN?
Oh yeah... if you do that... that would be tax evasion, right?
This doesn't mean I'm planning to do it... I'm just interested.
Best regards.

Hi,
Heating oil does not contain any additives to keep fuel injectors and valves clean. Otherwise, I am not aware of any other differences besides the red color.
To avoid a visit from the main customs office, you should probably leave the heating oil alone.
Best regards, Rainer.

Hey Blue Bear!
The base fuel is the same initially. However, gasoline for cars contains additives that alter certain properties of the gasoline. Your TDI will likely run quite well on heating oil, even without additives. However, you might encounter problems in the winter; I'm not sure if there's a cold-resistant type of heating oil available.
The problem with heating oil is that using it to avoid taxes is illegal and carries severe penalties, which can easily run into the thousands of euros. Furthermore, the dye in heating oil can still be detected long after multiple refills with taxed diesel. I've even had to undergo diesel checks myself. Customs officials can stop you, conduct a vehicle inspection, and check your fuel tank. So, if you ask me, don't do it!
Best regards,
Uwe

Thank you all... it was really just out of curiosity. You just start thinking about what else might be out there.

You could try using salad oil, because no one can really stop you, since it's vegetable oil, and there's obviously no mineral oil tax on that.
There are also companies that can modify your car so that it can run smoothly on vegetable oil. Supposedly, there are no problems even after prolonged use. However, these companies assume that you are using vegetable oil that has been specifically produced as a fuel and has a consistent quality.
This should not be confused with biodiesel, which is methyl esters of vegetable oil – specifically processed vegetable oil that could, in theory, be used in all diesel vehicles.
RME is, from an environmental perspective, arguably worse than conventional diesel due to the complex chemical production process and the increased emissions of nitrogen oxides (NOx) and other byproducts, however strange that may sound.

Subject: Heating Oil.
In my opinion, there's a loophole: If I own a used car, how can they prove who used the heating oil, me or one of my previous owners?
In case of doubt, the benefit of the doubt should be given to the defendant, or is there a fixed rule for that?
That would be interesting...
Best regards.
David.

Hello!
A friend of mine once tried it. After 15 kilometers, he could only manage a 11% incline in first gear with his Mercedes. The diesel filter was completely clogged with the dye.
I don't know why it should work better with a TDI, but I haven't really thought about it either...
Best regards, Ernst.

You should also not try to filter out the dye. Heating oil contains a second, invisible indicator. Removing this substance is supposed to be more expensive than simply using diesel.

Do you know why it's forbidden? Because it works. If it didn't work, it wouldn't be forbidden.
BTW: The filters got stuck because of the red dye?? I'm sorry. But that's a Captain Bluebear story.

regarding tax evasion:
If you are caught using heating oil illegally, in addition to the charges and consequences of tax evasion, you will also have to pay the following:
It is determined when the vehicle was purchased and with what mileage. Then, the tax difference between heating oil and diesel fuel must be paid for the kilometers driven since the vehicle was acquired (!!). Besides the embarrassment of being caught doing something like this and the potential damage to the engine, this is also a very expensive attempt to save on taxes.
I can only advise everyone against it.

By the way: The filters got stuck because of the red dye?? I'm sorry. But that's a Captain Bluebear story.
So, the person who told me that looks exactly like Captain Bluebear.
However, he worked in engine technology for a long time, and he assembled several Mercedes vehicles and other cars himself. Therefore, I assume he has at least a basic understanding of the subject, and I would be willing to buy the story from him again.
If it's not true, or if other factors were at play, then I don't care, as I said.
I would only find it perverse if someone disconnected their EGR system in order to supposedly keep the engine cleaner, and then filled it with heating oil.
Best regards, Ernst.

Are there additives in heating oil as well?
I would just let it go. Our country is quite strict when it comes to taxes, and even a single cent missing can cause problems.
Calculate how many kilometers you would have to drive just to cover the cost of the fine. -> It's not worth it.

There are no lubricating particles included. You have to take care of that yourself.
It's OIL! You don't need to add anything else to it. It lubricates just fine as it is.
