Hello, after reading the forum for at least a year, I would like to post a question about a problem I'm having.
I drive an Octavia manufactured in 1998 with a 110 hp TDI engine, model code AHF, and I'm also experiencing the problem of engine hesitation during acceleration, as well as difficulty starting when the engine is warm.
I tried to fix the error using the VAG-Com diagnostic tool, following the instructions described in this forum.
Here's the translation:

"That made me think: is it possible to modify the software in the engine control unit?"
The control unit has the designation 038906018 BR, with software version 2113.
The successor to the Octavia has software version 2163, identified by the code 038906018 GN.
I would appreciate a response from you.
Best regards, Werner.

Hello Werner,
Yes, you can modify the software, but in terms of the process, it's essentially the same thing.
is like chip tuning.
Your ECU (Engine Control Unit) is not yet flashable; it needs to be soldered.

Best regards,
Rudi

Hello Werner,

Basically, the software in MSG can always be modified.
Depending on the type of MSG (Modular Service Gateway), the process can be more or less complex. This means that some MSGs can be updated via the diagnostic interface. In these cases, software updates or tuning are very straightforward, as it simply involves installing new software.

'While the control unit might not be flashable through the diagnostic interface, that doesn't mean software updates are impossible. It just means the process is more complex, as you would need to desolder the EEPROM and replace it with a new EEPROM containing the updated software.'

Given an AHF (Application Hardware Feature) of 98, I am quite certain that the update cannot be performed via the diagnostic interface. This functionality will only be available in the next MSG (Main System Generation).
Therefore, the update will be somewhat more complex and will only be possible via a tuner.

Best regards, Jochen.
