Hello.
I'm considering converting my Bora (ALH) to a PD TDI engine. I'm looking at engines that produce between 130 and 150 horsepower.
Which engine code is better in terms of 'diseases' etc.? What are the weaknesses of 130 and 150 horsepower engines?
Regards,
Paul.

"In recent years of production (starting around ~2002, if I recall correctly), the engine blocks and crankshaft assemblies, etc., are almost identical in design (about 99%). The ASZ engine has a slightly smaller water pump."
The main differences are the chargers, low-voltage components, and software.
This means that if the vehicle is driven at full throttle continuously, the ARL (Average Remaining Life) will statistically decrease faster due to the higher peak loads. Gruß Ulf

Good question, I haven't done that before... but since ASZ and ARL have the exact same block within the G4 platform, I suspect it might work. Gruß Ulf

and that the ARL has a cooled EGR system and various hoses, control valves, and sensors, all of which are matched to different pressures and flow rates.

Then please provide specific information. How does the control loop differ?
The airflow of the charge air is only modified compared to the other charge air duct.

My automatic transmission (ASZ) with Tiptronic also had a cooled exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) system.

'My ALH engine had a similar issue. In the case of the ALH, it was more likely related to preheating the coolant for the interior heating system (or am I mistaken?). The automatic ALH models don't have glow plugs in the water.'

"No, not always assume that. Almost all TDIs have glow plugs in the coolant. Exceptions are Jan's Ibiza, my Golf, and as far as I know, the 9N Polos like Ulf's, which have electric heating elements in the ventilation system."
A cooled EGR system may slightly increase the temperature of the coolant. However, its primary purpose is different. By cooling the exhaust gases and recirculating them into the combustion chamber, better EGR rates can be achieved. This enables the simplest technical implementation of NOx reduction at idle speed/part load operation.
Automatic vehicles tend to have higher exhaust emissions due to their design, which necessitates stricter regulations. Consequently, many automatic TDI engines are equipped with cooled Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) systems. Even the newer engines incorporate this feature in manual transmissions as well.
ARL has definitely ensured adequate cooling, as has BPX, in order to meet regulatory limits even with these higher engine outputs.
Take a look at the modern EVO CDI systems from Mercedes in the new C-Class. A significant amount of money has been invested in an EGR (Exhaust Gas Recirculation) solution to meet emission standards. The "cheaper" solution, with an exhaust pipe directly into the intake manifold and a simple valve, like many of our TDI engines have, is often no longer sufficient today. This is certainly another reason why modern diesel engines are becoming increasingly expensive.

Okay, so I was thinking about a cooled EGR valve, different vacuum hoses, a different boost pressure control valve, a different boost pressure sensor, a different mass airflow sensor (MAF), and a different mixing valve on the diesel filter.

Yes, if you believe that!!!
Do you believe in God ? What about knowledge? I know that some of the components at the end of both engines were the same - but from when exactly? That's why I wrote it like that .

Various warm-water vehicles do not use glow plugs in the coolant system.
'Furthermore, what is the purpose of an ARL Wapu system in an ASZ (presumably a type of industrial plant)? Could it be to increase the coolant velocity?'
As long as the cooling performance is adequate, I wouldn't interfere with the system unless there was a compelling reason to do so.
Okay, back to the topic! I would immediately build an ARL (presumably referring to a specific engine or component), possibly with a longer transmission ratio!

Okay, that's the end of the story! (or the beginning). I just bought a used Bora with an AJM engine at a good price. Is this engine reliable, or is it prone to problems?

Well, I think it's better than its reputation suggests, as long as you don't push it too hard. There are also some that have run for 300,000 km or more. However, overall, the engine block isn't quite as robust as the versions with 130/150 horsepower. 3B5 AJM
