Hello, fellow diesel enthusiast!
The 1Z (with the new KW screw) of a friend suddenly stopped working (overnight) and would only start with a lot of smoke (and starting fluid). Since we disconnected the coolant temperature sensor, the engine has improved (without a start pilot), and we were finally able to start the engine - although it was running poorly.
In the memory, the injection start time was stored, which we have now corrected by turning the fuel pump 'later'. We have turned the ESP 5mm 'earlier', which I find quite extreme. Now the engine is running smoothly again.
But the underlying cause hasn't been fixed, and I don't want to take any chances. What I noticed in comparison to my 1Z is: The timing belt pulley deflects approximately 4mm 'tip-to-tip' (I'm an automotive technician

). Does this indicate a worn (despite being 'new') crankshaft? What else can we check? What do you think about the 5mm 'misalignment'? Is it possible that the timing belt has snapped around a tooth?
I know that 5mm is a very precise specification for a rotation

. I will provide an image showing where the 5mm is measured.
I have tried searching, but I couldn't find anything. If this topic has already been discussed in other threads, please provide a link or keywords that I can use to search the search engine.
Regarding the vehicle: VW Golf Variant, 1Z, Year of Manufacture: 1994, 224,000 km, the last timing belt replacement was two years and approximately 30,000 km ago.
Thank you and best regards,
Mathias
