Hello, fellow diesel enthusiast!

The 1Z (with the new KW screw) of a friend suddenly stopped working (overnight) and would only start with a lot of smoke (and starting fluid). Since we disconnected the coolant temperature sensor, the engine has improved (without a start pilot), and we were finally able to start the engine - although it was running poorly.

In the memory, the injection start time was stored, which we have now corrected by turning the fuel pump 'later'. We have turned the ESP 5mm 'earlier', which I find quite extreme. Now the engine is running smoothly again.

But the underlying cause hasn't been fixed, and I don't want to take any chances. What I noticed in comparison to my 1Z is: The timing belt pulley deflects approximately 4mm 'tip-to-tip' (I'm an automotive technician icon_wink.gif). Does this indicate a worn (despite being 'new') crankshaft? What else can we check? What do you think about the 5mm 'misalignment'? Is it possible that the timing belt has snapped around a tooth?

I know that 5mm is a very precise specification for a rotation icon_wink.gif. I will provide an image showing where the 5mm is measured.

I have tried searching, but I couldn't find anything. If this topic has already been discussed in other threads, please provide a link or keywords that I can use to search the search engine.

Regarding the vehicle: VW Golf Variant, 1Z, Year of Manufacture: 1994, 224,000 km, the last timing belt replacement was two years and approximately 30,000 km ago.

Thank you and best regards,
Mathias

If the stub was already rounded off, a new screw won't help. However, it is also possible that the ZR jumped over.

I expressed myself incorrectly, I meant: He already has the 'permanent' KW screw.

EDIT: Either from the factory or it was replaced during the first ZR change. Would a missed deadline have a more significant impact?

Yes, that would be a gamble... continuing to drive the car without at least taking a good look at the KW wheels.

Definitely, before the next engine start, remove the timing belt and check what's wrong.

Startpilot beim Diesel? Do you already know what you're doing?

The pulley's center distance is approximately 4mm "tip-to-tip"

Hello,

Please do not attempt to start the engine again. It is best to remove the KW coilover, re-plan the strut, and install a new strut with a new bolt. Torque to 90 Nm + 90 degrees (Not guaranteed). Everything else is Russian Roulette.

Greetings

It wasn't my idea. The guys wanted to get the donkey running again, and apparently, they were willing to do anything to achieve that... icon_rolleyes.gif

I will definitely tell the mechanic and the person holding the wheel what they should do (remove the wheel, plan the installation, and then reinstall it with the new screw).

Thank you for your help,
