Has anyone else noticed rust on the seams of the front fenders? My Golf IV is from 1998. I'll check with the dealership to see what they say about it.

Regards,

Where exactly are the rust spots located?
Where does the wheel arch connect?

Okay, those are the metal plates that you sometimes need to cut or modify if the wheel and tire combination is too wide. Mine originally came with 16-inch tires, so it probably shouldn't be the reason in my case, unless something has been changed. Also, it's happening on both fenders...

Is it on the inside? Do you have to take anything apart to see it?

I'll take a look at that...
i.e., it could also be hail damage...

Actually, no, because it's blowing air out, so the rust is coming from the inside... Also, the paint hasn't chipped off in those areas.

Is the inverter not fully galvanized (at least from the factory)?
Could it possibly be a poorly repaired accident damage (from the previous owner)?

Everything is fine at the front of my Golf – there isn't a single speck of rust.
Are you the original owner of the car?

I think it's the third one. Anyway, I'll go to the dealer where I bought it. If it turns out that the fenders aren't original, he'll definitely find a solution... Otherwise, I'll expect some goodwill gesture.

For your information.
The right fender was rusted through; apparently, this is a common issue according to the dealer, and it's caused by a rubber lip inside the fender. I have submitted a warranty claim, and I am curious to see how it will be resolved.
A request I submitted has been rejected because the 6-year anti-corrosion warranty had expired, which I believe is incorrect, as my service booklet mentions a 12-year anti-corrosion warranty for models from 1998 onwards... let's see icon_wink.gif.
Okay, the left one hasn't rusted through yet, but that one will need attention too. Then it's the same process all over again. I definitely won't let it stay in this condition. It can't be right for a fully galvanized vehicle to rust after only 6 years!

Absolutely not.
It has a 12-year warranty due to full galvanization.
I've never seen that before: rust on the inside of a car door.

'So, the request for leniency was rejected because of a six-year warranty against rust, blah blah. The friendly employee advised me to file a complaint... What do you think? Should I contact ADAC or Auto Bild? Honestly, I'm not going to just accept this!'

The only thing that's really good about the car is the engine; all the other accessories are breaking down one after another, like the air conditioning, window lifters, etc... great quality icon_sad.gif icon_evil.gif icon_twisted.gif.

Okay, so – about two years ago, I responded to this thread and didn't believe that something like this existed.

Meanwhile, it's happened to me (or my Golf). There's rust on the front fenders - specifically, at the top of the wheel arch. And it's quite a bit of rust, "around the corner" so to speak, meaning it's visible, especially on the driver's side.

According to online research, this issue is apparently known and primarily occurs in TDI models, as the engine vibrations cause the wheel arch liner to resonate and rub against the contact surface on the inner fender.

"A warranty claim has been submitted and rust removal has been approved. However, it seems the plan is only to repaint the affected area, which I believe is problematic on the driver's side because the corrosion is quite extensive there – I fear it will reappear eventually."

There's another area of rust starting on the roof, just below the gutter trim, at approximately the level of the B-pillar. This is where the rear edge of the driver's door presses against the seal when closing the door. It seems that over time, the seal has been rubbing against the paint layer. Let's see if this will also be repaired.
It's clear I've reached the target mileage; last week it was around 150,000 km. ;(.
I can provide more images later if needed.

Should I insist on getting a new left fender?
