Hello,

My engine, which has now run for 226,000 km, is burning oil icon_cry.gif (white smoke that smells like burnt oil). This has only started today. Oil is also being burned at idle, and strangely, it doesn't burn oil constantly, but only intermittently. Sometimes it's good for a while and almost nothing is burned, then other times it burns more and for a longer period until you can't see anything, and then it starts again. Oh yes, it no longer reaches its maximum speed (240 km/h) on the highway. It was at about 220 km/h when I floored it, and suddenly the power (and km/h) dropped, and it started smoking. I took my foot off the gas and didn't try it again (it felt too dangerous).

Does anyone know about the turbocharger, perhaps?

White smoke would actually be water.

High oil consumption can indicate a faulty KGE (wastegate). Measure the KGE pressure. If that's not the problem, disconnect the hose from the turbo to the intercooler (at the turbo) and check if there's excessive oil in it. A small amount of oil residue is normal.

Are you sure that it doesn't "simply" produce excessive smoke occasionally?

Possibly unburned diesel? icon_confused.gif

Are you sure that he doesn't 'simply' sometimes produce excessive smoke?

'White smoke: I need to improve. I'm getting white smoke that smells like burnt oil...'

'I'm sure it's not soot, because he was already doing that (due to the tuning box). Soot looks different.'

Hello.

'I just visited my mechanic's shop (formerly specializing in Audi & VW). The master mechanic thinks it might be the turbocharger, but he's hesitant to replace it based on suspicion alone, as it would cost 1000 euros. He says the engine only burns oil when it's fully warmed up and you're giving it full throttle. The smoking is less noticeable during deceleration and partial throttle, but it doesn't go away completely.'
Unfortunately, he can't definitively say that it's the turbocharger, as the engine otherwise runs normally (it 'pulls' well and doesn't make any abnormal noises). What speaks against gradual wear is that the problem appeared suddenly.
What should I do now? Should I go to the next qualified Audi & VW workshop?

Best regards,
Dylofix

Have your KGE pressure measured, as described above.

If nothing comes out, disconnect the hose from the turbocharger that leads to the intercooler. If there's a lot of oil in it, disconnect the hose from the air filter to the turbocharger. If there's a lot of oil in that one too, check the cyclone separator. If there's only a thin film of oil in it, your turbocharger is leaking oil.

Hello,

I've had a few more conversations (xxx <I won't mention any specific companies here> - Turbo Technik, the workshop where my car was) and I'm going to remove the turbocharger and send it to xxx Turbo Technik for inspection.

I will provide further updates...

That's exactly how you do it. If it's not the turbo then, you can still measure the KGE pressure. That would be too much work, too expensive, and too unlikely icon_confused.gif.

I hope you just forgot to mention that the KGE pressure is okay.

Hello,

I don't understand.
Why do you have to remove and send the turbocharger for repair, which will cost you significantly more time and money?
Measuring the crankcase pressure isn't difficult at all!

Sorry, I was just following the thread, but I really had to say something now.

Some people simply cannot be helped.... icon_confused.gif

Regards,
Marcus.

You don't need a forum for something like that; the authorized workshop can handle it without the internet.

Hi,

I didn't remove the turbocharger, but I had the crankcase pressure checked first, and that was the problem. A repair kit was installed, and the problem no longer exists. I'm relieved to have spent 375 euros on this.

Well, that surprises me now, it really was the KGE icon_evil.gif. I thought you really wanted to remove the turbo...

Hopefully, your qualified workshop at least installed the cyclone filter, otherwise you might as well start saving again.

I don't think so; there's nothing about it in the invoice icon_confused.gif.
Could it still be installed retroactively?

Yes, you can. But I would wait until it gets clogged again. What they replaced it with is a fabric filter, but a cyclone filter should have been installed there. So, it will cost the same again.

Could you please provide the part number of the KGE (Kühler, Gebläse, Einspritzung - cooler, fan, injection system) that they installed? Maybe you'll get lucky. The Zyklon filter has the number: 059 103 464 B.

You're not really into forums, are you? First, you ignored the repeated tip about KGE. Then, you didn't notice that we knew it right away. So, it must have happened before. I would have checked here to see if we had a solution to the problem...
