I want to install an original VW navigation system in my Bora. Now, you can find these things quite cheaply on eBay. However, there are different versions being sold (D-version, B/C version). What's the difference between them? They are all large navigation devices with color monitors.

There are different software versions available, some with bug fixes and others with additional features. For example, I believe the 'A' version cannot navigate using the main map view, but only in arrow mode or something similar.
However, the software can be updated using a CD-ROM, and these CDs are also available on eBay. However, this update is not entirely risk-free!

hi all,
I have personally equipped two TDIs with navigation systems before, so here's my recommendation regarding the 'large' VW navigation system (i.e., the one with the map display).

1) Stay away from A and B because...
- slower CD drives
- Not compatible with dx systems (and therefore cannot work with dx CD players!), and therefore, an update to TMC is not possible.
- To determine the wheel rotations, they require the ABS signal (safety risk!) or an additional adapter if you want to tap into the GALA signal instead of the ABS signal.

2) C and D are functionally equivalent; I couldn't find any further information besides the rumor that 'D has a better CD drive.'
- These devices work perfectly with Gala, without requiring any additional adapters.
- both 'standard' and dx-cds can be used.
- Retrofitting with an external TMC (Traffic Message Channel) box is possible.

3) The devices get very hot on the audio amplifier. Ensure adequate ventilation.
- Software updates only work with the corresponding hardware. The attempt to upgrade a 'B' navigation system to a 'D' navigation system via a software update is pointless, because the hardware unfortunately remains the same.
- The built-in CD-ROM drive definitely cannot play audio CDs (which is a shame), even if someone claims otherwise.

4) There's a lot of misleading information being spread on eBay, especially regarding the hardware versions of these devices!
Please pay attention to:
display (pixel defect)
CD drive (making scraping noises = damaged unit!!).
original card-based CD (not a copy!!), etc.
Also: Before bidding, check with the seller to ensure they have proper documentation proving the item's origin, otherwise you might have problems with the authorities.
(by the way... in the year 2000, an a-navi system cost approximately...) DM 400,- (German currency)

Also, take a look here as well: http://www.fahrzeugnavigation.de.vu/

greetings, hans
