TDI: A Different Approach

A little off-topic, but probably interesting to some people...

Did you know that VW is sending Jutta Kleinschmidt into the desert with a TDI-powered vehicle?

1.9-liter engine, 218 horsepower at 4250 RPM, 390 Nm of torque at 3000 RPM.

What do you think... is this a PD or a VE?

It doesn't really feel right.

If I remember correctly, there was an article about the engine or the buggy in a VW magazine. The only thing it has in common with the standard TDI is probably the engine displacement. Everything else is specially reinforced. Otherwise, it probably wouldn't be able to handle it.

We were at the car show yesterday and saw the Tareg. Unfortunately, it was a fake, or rather, an empty shell. It was just the body on wheels.

But VW built a TDI kit car. For racing use. 240 horsepower from the TDI engine. And only that much... it's not a PD - my VAG mechanic told me to go with that.

Unfortunately, I can't say anything more about that.

What surprises me now is that, among all the interesting details, they only wrote "Diesel racing catalytic converter." What exactly is different about a diesel racing catalytic converter compared to a "standard, everyday catalytic converter"?

I've only ever known about catalytic converters in the context of meeting emissions standards. Since they're usually located closer to the engine and made of metal, they heat up faster. Perhaps they're also slightly more optimized for airflow, but does that make a significant difference?
