Hello fellow DIY enthusiasts,

After complaining about the unsuccessful repair (PD elements were replaced) at my VAG dealer on Friday, I tried troubleshooting myself. Replacing the PD elements eliminated some errors that I hadn't reported, but not the two original errors.
1. Engine vibrations at idle.
2. Jerking or jolting when first accelerating from idle at 1400-1800 RPM and at 2400 RPM.

When the EGR valve is disconnected, the jerking/stuttering problem (number 2) disappears!
What now?
I really don't want to drive around with a disconnected EGR valve.

I haven't been able to reproduce this error with the EU3 engine (ATD). It seems that it's necessary to keep the EGR valve open for a much longer time in order to meet the emission standard (EU4). Unfortunately, this comes at the expense of driving comfort!

Hi Bertil.

Does the last sentence also apply after taking a look at your intake manifold icon_eek.gif?

Did you experience any limp-home mode symptoms during the test without the EGR system?

At least with my tractor, the EGR rate can be changed using VAGCOM (through the mass airflow channel).
If this also works with AXR, it could be a possible way to at least reduce the symptoms icon_idea.gif icon_question.gif.

The intake manifold looks like it's been freshly polished.

No more jerking now. I've been driving for three days without the hose attached to the EGR valve.

I need to check that out. That might work! Thanks for the idea.

Hi Bertil.

PDs are becoming increasingly mysterious to me... how can this even work?
Could it be related to the exhaust cooling system, or did the mechanics happen to install a new intake manifold for you at the same time as they replaced the DPF elements icon_idea.gif icon_question.gif?

Umm, I don't know offhand. But you're right, the EGR system should contain some soot.

When I tried to register the car, I witnessed the emissions test being performed on it. There wasn't even the slightest trace of soot visible! The new EU4 PD models hardly produce any smoke at all. Even at night, you can barely see a haze in the rearview mirror.

Hi Ulf,

Sometimes I feel like blowing up the workshops!

Yesterday, when I took a closer look at my engine compartment, I noticed the many dry moving parts (VTG linkage, gear shift mechanism, linkage for the AGR cooling system) icon_eek.gif. So, I decided to lubricate them (...a well-oiled machine runs smoothly...). Suddenly, my transmission is as smooth as it's ever been, and despite having reactivated the AGR, it didn't jerk this morning icon_biggrin.gif!!

One should prohibit workshops from offering engine cleaning services icon_evil.gif!!!! Unfortunately, the cleaning work at this workshop is done by an external service provider that apparently has no knowledge of technology.

I haven't found the source of the idle vibrations yet icon_sad.gif.

Hi Bertil.

That would be worth submitting as a contribution to the error database, so that practical experiences from data protection (PD) can also be included icon_wink.gif.

Hello,
For the AGR valve, there is a perforated plate that allows less exhaust gas to pass through.
I've installed it a few times already.

The symptom was poor acceleration in 3rd or 4th gear, apparently because the EGR valve remained open for too long. This mainly affects AWX engines (130 hp).
If you're interested, I can look up a part number for you.

Best regards.

Oh, don't tell me this is a Volkswagen part?
For which cases does Volkswagen then recommend the installation?

Well, I'm definitely interested in that number.

I would be very grateful for that.

I'll check the part number on Monday; I can't get to it right now.

Best regards.
