Hi.

I hope to find a solution here.

I have an A4 Avant 1.8 from 04/1997, and the ignition switch has been sticking since yesterday.

The key is difficult to insert and remove. Once it's in, it turns relatively easily, but the detents for "ignition on" and "start" are gone or misaligned. I can start the car, but when I release the key, it turns back to the "ignition off" position on its own.

The steering wheel lock isn't working either.

At first, the key wouldn't come out at all; I had to twist it forcefully several times before I could finally pull it out.

What could be broken here? I don't want to replace everything, but only the components that are causing the problem.

Thank you for any helpful answers.

Rüdi.

Just replace the ignition switch. I've had to do that a few times on an A4 before...

The electrical part?

It's strange that the key is difficult to insert and remove.

Do I need to remove the steering wheel to install this, or can it be done without removing it?

"I'm just asking because the car is currently at a friend's place, and he doesn't have the right tools."

Best regards, Rüdi.

If you can remove the cover around the steering wheel, you don't necessarily have to remove the steering wheel itself. However, that's usually not the case.

The switch protrudes at the top and thus becomes wedged... A change can be accomplished in a few seconds after removing the handlebar.

Simply remove the slotted screws under the paint, then detach the switch. Insert the new switch, tighten the screws, and connect the cables.
