What's the easiest or fastest way to get it out?

What's even more important is how to deal with the driveshaft; I don't know how to get it off from the back.

"Remove all the switches and the heating control panel. There are screws behind them in various places."
Remove all the screws and take off the control panel cover.

The gearbox has two screws that come loose, and then the gearbox is only held in place by the speedometer cable.
To get it out, I think I removed the panel under the steering wheel and fiddled around from underneath.
The connector is inserted and has clamping jaws that need to be squeezed together.

I once read something about a plastic part potentially falling off the tachometer shaft.

"On my Golf 2 from 1988, no plastic part came out when I removed the speedometer cable. When you pull off the cable, don't bend it downwards, as it leads upwards to the speedometer; otherwise, nothing should fall out. You can either remove the cable from below or try to slide it past the speedometer on the side, although that's not easy and be careful not to scratch the plastic with your hands."
