Hallo,
perhaps someone could help me or tell me what the meaning of the error is, since I don't have any error descriptions for ABS.
Vehicle:
VW Golf 4 SDI, year 1998, engine code: AGP, 172tkm
ABS:
ECU number: 1J0 907 379 D
ABS 20 IE CAN 0001
1 error
00283 Speed sensor front left (G47) 35 - 00 - -
The error occurred during the drive; the warning light briefly flashed and then remained on after a dip in the road. Initially, the error occurred sporadically, but after I cleared it, it became permanent.
My father was driving the vehicle. He explained what happened when he got home.
So far, I have only checked the connectors on the plug; everything seems to be OK.
Is it possible to check the ABS sensor using VAG-COM? If so, what is the path?
For any help, I would like to thank you in advance. :)
Best regards,
germa |

If you have a VAG COM, it's quite simple. You can read the speed for each wheel in the ABS control unit. If there's nothing or nothing plausible on the front left, simply check the connections to the connector, especially the one through the wheel arch, and the ABS unit itself, and test for continuity. It's also possible that the sensor wheel is dirty. Check that as well. If you can't find any faults, the probability of a faulty sensor increases significantly. |

I also suspect a dirty sensor. I once experienced a similar phenomenon after a tire change. Since the sensor is magnetic, it tends to collect rust from the brake disc. First, try to remove it from the guide and verschandeln it. If that doesn't work -> Ulf's contribution |

Be careful when removing it, otherwise it will definitely be broken.
It is safer to compare the wheel rotation while driving slowly - then you will also know if it is broken and if it shows nothing for a short time.
The old sensors in the Sharan, for example, fail because they are clogged; when removing them, they break! Gruß, der Teileklaus

Thanks again for the information.
@ matthiasTDI96
I have an old VAG-Com version, but unfortunately I don't have a path to check the ABS sensor. The cable has been checked and is also OK.
@ R.M.
The ABS sensor is clean, and there are still errors.
@ teileklaus
Yes, unfortunately, this is a common problem with VW ABS sensors, which often break when they are removed.
The probability that the ABS sensor is defective is high. Therefore, I bought a new ABS sensor for 10,-€ on eBay (including shipping) and will try to connect it. If it's not the ABS sensor, I can afford the 10,-€ for the sensor; I'll then keep it. :)

I'm assuming that a brand new sensor is okay!
P.S. It's not an original VW replacement part. (Costs around 50,-€ at the dealership) |

Okay, the new ABS sensor is installed and the error is gone.
But removing the old one was a real pain.
It just wouldn't come out. I had to hit it with a hammer and then it finally came loose.
I used a file to remove the rust and then I applied plenty of grease so that no more rust would form.
Best regards,
