Hi.
I'm considering installing a Calix engine heater.
I especially like that it's pressed into the hose system for the 2.0 (P)PD TDIs, making it completely "removable" and not, as in the past, permanently embedded in the block.
Things are quite tight at the BMR in the 3C building.
Has anyone installed a Calix system in a similar car?
Are there any tips or pictures available?
Thank you.

Without knowing the available space...
It can't possibly be that tight, that there wouldn't be room for something the size of a fist (which, moreover, would be installed in place of the hose at that specific location). T5 California (CFCA) 4Motion

Fitting it in won't be a problem, I agree with you on that.
The challenge is getting to it, because I didn't really want to remove the radiator to access it.

You'll hardly be able to move around in that.
Basically, the installation is already quite tight in the empty engine compartment of the Golf, especially when the hoses are reluctant to come off and the power cable needs to be properly routed.
But don't let the work deter you; a pre-heater (if there's an outlet near the car) only has advantages. T5 California (CFCA) 4Motion

The power outlet isn't the issue; the problem is that it gets damaged if I'm not careful when parking.
Just finished screwing it together, and now it's so cold .
The hoses have only been on for 33,000 km, so I'm hoping they'll just come off easily.
Do you have any pictures of your heater?

If the power outlet is located directly in front of the car, it is advisable to position the corresponding outlet on the car centrally.
In case you forget to tighten the connection properly, it will likely come loose relatively quickly when under tension.

How is the operation/usability?
How early (before the engine starts) do you engage the gear, and how warm is the engine by that point?
To the best of my knowledge, this component has a power rating of 550 watts.
The power outlet for the car will be located there.

I think you're right about the 550 watts.
Of course, you can't expect it to perform like a 5 kW water heater, but it's sufficient.
With an outside temperature of 3°C and a heating system run time of 30 minutes, warm air already enters the car after a short distance (~250 meters). Normally, it takes about 2 km for the car to warm up without using the heating system.
At around 0°C, the heating system can raise the engine temperature to an estimated 60°C overnight and maintain that temperature, but it can't go any higher.
In my daily routine, I set the heating to turn on about 1.5-2 hours before I leave (depending on how cold it feels). This is enough to warm up the engine and provide slightly warm air right after starting, even when the temperatures are below freezing.
I don't think anything else is necessary, because with this solid base temperature, the engine will also warm up quickly. T5 California (CFCA) 4Motion

How much does the BMR differ from the AXR in the region served by the heating system? In my opinion, the difference is very small. Then you can use the images from the technical article. The 1Z and the AXR are described there.
If you still want pictures of the Subaru Forester 09 with the Calix, I can also provide them to you... Gruß Bertil

Hi Bertil.
You didn't connect the heater to the AXR using an adapter hose, but rather you cut the original hose.
I'm not sure, but my gut feeling is that there isn't much space available in front of the oil filter housing on my car. I have a 16V crossflow engine, and therefore there's a lot more stuff "in front" of it.
And that's precisely why the question arises about its integration into the PPD.

Okay, it's located more to the side of the oil filter. The hose comes out from the water heater to the side. If it's different on the PPD (I don't have that in mind right now), then you'll need to attach an adapter hose. Gruß Bertil
