Golf 3 Steering Column Noise: Causes & Fixes

"I've been hearing a creaking noise coming from the steering column for a while now. It only occurs when the interior of the car is warm. What's strange is that the noise is audible even when driving straight (no steering input). I mean, when driving over bumps, it creaks. What could it be? Does something need to be lubricated or oiled?"

My G3 Var made a creaking sound when I turned it on... I also think it made the sound when it was warm.

After no one could find it for over a year or two, and I was once again lying under the car, taking pictures and looking at the engine, I decided to adjust the tie rod ends (a few degrees makes a difference).
UI, creaking...

It was fixed by replacing the two tie rod ends!
