Post01-02-2003, 21:11    Subject: Audi B4: Transfer Steuer E2 to Euro2? Quote

Hello fellow TDI enthusiasts,

Since I've only owned an Audi 80 TDI for a few weeks, I'm now wondering (after receiving the tax report from the tax office)...

I have to pay €23.06 per 100ccm... The key number is 14, but it says 'low emissions' and 'E2' at the top of the vehicle registration documents!

Now I heard that for the Audi B4 TDI 1.9L engine, you can simply 'reclassify' it so that the total annual taxes are only €281.

Does anyone have experience with this, or any helpful tips?

Unfortunately, the seller of the car lied. icon_sad.gif He told us that he had to pay 281 euros in annual taxes.

The car's manufacturing date is November 1993.

Regards,
Holger.

Hey, you should check out FA Twintec; they offer catalytic converters for retrofitting. Unfortunately, your key number 14 indicates that your car falls under Euro 1 regulations and similar standards, which means it will be more expensive to retrofit. If your key number starts with 3 followed by 534, 535, or 543, you're in luck and can have it retrofitted. HJS is also an option for retrofitting, but I haven't checked their offerings specifically. Best regards, Gerrit.

I had already posted this before (use the search function!), but I've copied it out again:

I had my Passat (year 1994) converted to meet Euro 2 emissions standards. The Volkswagen workshop that did the conversion said that all 'TDI' engines (not just 'TD') from within the group are capable of meeting Euro 2 standards!
It cost me 10 Deutschmarks at the car dealership and 10 Deutschmarks at the registration office (or were those Euros?). I got a new registration certificate and a change made to the vehicle's title. Everything went smoothly. It's a shame I didn't know this earlier...

Hi David.

P.S.: The fact that you supposedly get back the excess taxes paid in previous years is unfortunately just an internet myth.

Hi,

While all TDIs may be Euro2 compliant, that doesn't necessarily mean they are all environmentally friendly.
However, not all of them can be converted without a new Euro 2 catalytic converter.
In my case, a new catalytic converter was definitely needed (costing €370 instead of the expected €580 icon_evil.gif).

Since you (like my AAT) have key number 14, you won't be able to avoid getting a replacement catalytic converter.
It's definitely worth it, because starting January 1st, 2005, the Euro1 tax will increase from €23.06 to a whopping €27.35!

By the way: 'E2 low-emission' means Euro1!
Anyone who thinks that 'E2' means 'Euro2' is to blame for their own misunderstanding.

And one more thing:
I got my cat from Oberland Mangold; they also have a nice overview of different cat breeds available as a PDF file somewhere on the internet.

@david

Getting a refund for overpaid taxes from previous years is not a fairytale. I also had the vehicle re-registered in the summer. It cost about 15 euros at the registration office alone. About six weeks after the re-registration, I received a letter from the tax office with a refund of almost 600 euros. So, this has happened since I've been driving the vehicle!

.... and there's even a catalytic converter for a 1Z included! The 1Z can be easily converted (with VW paperwork). This catalytic converter is unnecessary! I even asked Oberland Mangold http://www.oxi-kat.de/ about it, and only got a vague answer.

Hi Bertil,

Yes, that's actually correct - for engines with a displacement of less than 2000 cc, there is a special regulation requiring a manufacturer's certificate, right?
I just thought that key number 14 always requires a Euro2 converter for remapping.

Don't tell me I would have needed a new catalytic converter for the 2.5 TDI too – if you say that, I'll bite the table!

And please don't get the idea that I'm trying to promote Oberland-Mangold. They were just cheaper than HJS in my case. My workshop usually uses HJS.

Hi,

Call the Audi customer service; they can tell you immediately! My father got confirmation from Audi regarding his Audi 80 TDI (though it was manufactured in August 1994), and then he had that document converted into an official form for the tax office – and that was it!

Best regards, Christian.

I can't really tell you, I only know this information for gasoline engines above 2000 cc and with key number 03.

Schlüsselnummer 25 oder 26 ist Euro 2 beim Diesel. The number 14 is equivalent to one euro.

... I unfortunately can't tell you, but as Haehnlein already says: Why don't you ask Audi? Then choose a tabletop made of fir wood so it doesn't become too hard. icon_wink.gif
With the 2.5-liter engine, it's quite possible that a new catalytic converter is needed.

Okay, but we should clarify these things here. I think it's important for everyone.

to explain key number 14.
In 1993 or 1994, key numbers 25 and higher did not yet exist. Therefore, cars that actually had key number 25/26 (Euro 2) or 30 (Euro 3) were classified as key number 14. Some vehicle owners were notified, while others were simply forgotten. If you now have such a car that was incorrectly classified, contact VAG and request a certificate for reclassification. In this case, any excess tax already paid will be refunded. Alternatively, you can go to an exhaust catalytic converter retrofit specialist and have your car converted. However, in this case, the refund will only apply from the date of the conversion.
Sure, here's the translation:

"CU" is an abbreviation for "see you." It can be used in a variety of contexts, such as:

* In text messages or emails to say goodbye.
* At the end of a phone call or video chat.
* When leaving a meeting or event.
* As a casual way to say hello when arriving somewhere.

"CU" is often used by people who are close friends or family members, but it can also be used in more formal settings.

Hi Gerrit,

That is probably the crucial clue icon_exclaim.gif icon_idea.gif. Thank you.

Hello.
I am now answering my own question, so I was able to get my car registered/insured.
'Key number: 14, confirmed by an Audi approval certificate (ABE).'
New key number: 26. Vehicle tax was previously €438. Now, according to online information, it is €281 without having a new catalytic converter installed.
On the ABE platform, there are some type keys that can be modified if someone has questions or needs to make changes. I'd be happy to send you a copy via email.
send. icon_smile.gif

@audi80avant:

I'm glad. Especially, the seller was right after all icon_smile.gif.

@Rainer:

Isn't this something that should be added to the TDI knowledge base?

@joergs
Okay, so I just couldn't do it, because I didn't have the car for very long back then... icon_rolleyes.gif

But I don't think that's very good of 'Freundlichen'. icon_evil.gif I bought the car there, and thanks to the 1-year warranty, they later had the registration documents in their hands more often. They should have noticed something then. icon_wink.gif Because when I heard about it, one beautiful day I went there and asked, very innocently, how things were with changing the license plate. And they spontaneously said, 'No problem.' Well, great -> You really have to take care of everything yourself... In life, you don't get anything for free. }

@david

'Of course, you have to take care of everything yourself! My experience was similar. I've had the car for 4 years now. Unfortunately, I bought it from a dealership. They were fully aware of the tax issue, and they could have said something or taken care of it themselves! But they didn't. I only stumbled upon it by chance when I received the tax assessment notice and realized I was supposed to pay almost 50 DM for every 100ccm. The registration document says 'E2,' which means EURO1. I then started researching, and that's how I came across this issue with incorrect classifications! When I mentioned it to the dealership, they just gave me a cheeky grin and shrugged their shoulders. I also think it's wrong of VW not to inform customers about such significant issues. VW should actually have the data for both the vehicle and the customer!'

or is there a system behind it? icon_question.gif icon_question.gif icon_exclaim.gif icon_eek.gif

As Gerrit already wrote: some people were notified, and some weren't. icon_wink.gif Apparently, it even appeared in the 'Frankenpost' (the local newspaper) back then. icon_rolleyes.gif

These are probably the last major secrets of the VAG group. Just like with the GRA in the TDI. At first, they claimed it wouldn't be possible, but then I showed them the instructions, and suddenly it worked icon_wink.gif (I didn't have a VAG-Com back then).
