Hello,

For the factory-specified maximum performance level of the 1.9 PD engine (118 kW = BPX and BUK in the Ibiza Cupra), the owner's manual specifies WIV oil (506.01 or 507.00), and this is the only acceptable type, despite the vehicle having fixed maintenance intervals.
What's the point of that? I thought that for highly tuned engines, a thicker oil would be more appropriate (505.01 = 5W40 instead of xW30) to ensure good lubrication reserves even at high oil temperatures icon_eek.gif.

Perhaps because the 505.01 specification is too loosely defined, and despite the higher viscosity, it only guarantees a poorer level of wear protection. Of course, "guaranteed" doesn't mean it can't be exceeded voluntarily.

Na haben die LL- Öle denn nicht den abgesenkten HTHS- Wert ( Temperaturabh. (Shutter stability)?
That would actually be more likely to be against the use of LL oil in these engines icon_confused.gif.

They have that option, but it's not the only criterion. And, as has been pointed out several times, the oil policy at VAG is not always easy to understand.

In my opinion, the key issue is that VW specifies a viscosity of 5W-30 for new oils. I think they made a mistake somewhere with the VW505.01 specification, and the same goes for VW 506.00 01.
However, for older engines, roughly manufactured up to around 2004, I would recommend using 5W-40.
Then, use 505.01 oil with a viscosity of 5W-30, or alternatively, use 507.00 oil.
I don't think a thicker oil is appropriate; it depends on how the oil line thickness and oil pressure are matched.
Fixed maintenance intervals are not only linked to the oil, but also to other components installed in the vehicle. It's the same engine being used, but the sensor technology is different.
"Just use VW 507.00; it's not that expensive anymore."

Hi,

The oil specification is, for the time being, relatively independent of the viscosity. I don't know how much LL2 oil costs, but good, standard 505.01 oil, for example with a 5W-40 viscosity, is very cheap and readily available everywhere.

Best regards, Rainer.

Fixed maintenance intervals are not only linked to the oil, but also to other components installed in the vehicle. It will be the same engine, but the sensor technology may not be as advanced.
Therefore, regarding the hardware differences: According to the part numbers in the documentation, the engine blocks of the ARL and BPX/BUK models are completely identical in construction - except for the stronger head gasket bolts of the ARL, which are unlikely to significantly affect the oil quality requirements. icon_lol.gif
Okay, the BUK (in EU4) has different production efficiency (PDE) than the ARL/BPX factories (the latter have the same PDE).

For ARL vehicles, the 505.01 specification is approved for fixed intervals, but Seat insists on using WIV-approved oil with the same fixed intervals for BPX/BUK engines.

Unfortunately, I haven't dealt with that particular problem yet.
However, there used to be a question about whether the 507.00 model should be used with engines that didn't have Wiv technology.
That would be the recommendation.
Only use part number 505.01 for TDI PD engines from 1999-2003.
R5/V10 models manufactured before 2006 were only compatible with software version 506.01.

Unfortunately, I don't know how the Ibiza models from 2004 onwards are configured. However, you can definitely use the 506.01 or the 507.00 parts.
The 506.01 grade should not be used due to its reduced HTHS (High-Temperature High-Shear) viscosity.
Therefore, please choose the appropriate oil promptly. If your engine is from 2004-2009, then use the oil specification that was developed for that period (VW507.00). Why would you revert to an oil specification from 1999 (505.01)?

How do you mean that? What's wrong with the 505 01 5W-40 oil?

For vehicles with DPFs (Diesel Particulate Filters), the manufacturer requires an oil with low ash content. Therefore, some engines require oil meeting the 504/507 specification, even though they do not have a WIV (Warm-up Idle Valve).

Because

The 1.9-liter PD engine design, introduced in 1999, was essentially built unchanged until my engine's production end in 2006 (and beyond).

2. I'm generally skeptical of today's "all-in-one" oils (similar to universal tools that often don't do anything well). While a highly refined property like "low ash" isn't necessary for my specific engine, achieving such a property often requires other compromises in the oil's formulation that I want to avoid for the sake of my engine.

"I haven't heard or read anything generally negative about the 505.01 oils, but I have heard some complaints about the thin WIV fluid 506.01."

4. 505.01 costs approximately half as much as WIV oils.

I've discovered something new for those who use 5W40 oil: There's now an oil in 5W40 that meets both the 229.51 and 505.01 specifications, which was previously only available in 5W30. Real and Motul both offer such a product. However, the price is €55 per 5 liters, which is on the higher end (LL3 level).

Okay, so...
I wouldn't recommend the 506.01 to you either, because of its low HTHS value. And if you don't have a closed DPF that requires low-ash oil, then I would rather use a 505.01, 5W-40, than a 507.00, 5W-30, and just ignore SEAT's specification.
There are people who are very satisfied with non-approved 0W-40 oil in their PD-TDI engines, even considering the price. icon_wink.gif Could this be another alternative?!

So,
I wouldn't recommend the 506.01 specification to you either, due to its low HTHS value.
...

I often wonder why this absurd claim still persists.
The motors are designed for this purpose, and therefore they must be able to function reliably over the long term.

The price shouldn't be a deciding factor if you negotiate properly with a reputable dealer. At least, I'm able to purchase the 50700 model for significantly less than the 50501 or 50601 models.

Hi Goettmann,
Probably because, besides the potential for fuel savings, there are few arguments to justify such a significantly reduced HTHS value! If you know of any other reasons, please share them. Certainly, many engines have run for a long time with the 506.01 specification, but if there are oils with higher HTHS values and otherwise similar properties, or if you drive mostly long distances or frequently under heavy load, then there is no reason to choose an oil with a reduced HTHS value of less than 3.5 mPa*s.
Why was the HTHS value increased again with the 507.00 specification?

Regarding your concerns about reliability: VW engines are designed to handle a lot, but not necessarily to function reliably for a long time. If you're looking for more information, check out the T5 forum and search for topics like DPF (Diesel Particulate Filter), oil dilution, oil pump, water pump, etc. It's not a pleasant experience, and it makes some of the company's "well-intentioned" guidelines seem questionable.
