Oil Consumption Spikes Suddenly!?

I drive a car with a 90 horsepower TDI engine, and it has almost 170,000 kilometers on the odometer.

Over 1 liter / 1000 km is more than what the engines are maximally allowed to consume from the factory, and therefore indicates a defect.

You can also perform a preliminary compression test yourself; the instructions are described on Rainer's website in the used car tips section.
If it doesn't produce any serious results, it could be due to the causes described by Michael, which are all quite unpleasant (because they are expensive to repair) .
