Squeaky Brake Pedal: Causes and Fixes

Hi,
bei meinem 1Z quietscht das Bremspedal beim wenn ich den Fuss runternehme. Why?

Has anyone ever experienced this before?
It's been more than before since the last brake disc and pad replacement. It could also be a coincidence.

Outside, the noise is louder than inside, so the 'cause' must be located in the engine compartment .

I've experienced similar problems with every car I've owned from the VAG group (AUDI 80, 1979; POLO, 1988; Golf III, 1992; Golf III, 1995), but only as the cars got older and accumulated more mileage.
According to information from 'Freundlicher,' the issue may be related to the return spring, which, however, cannot be lubricated.
With the POLO, the noise was surprisingly no longer noticeable when there was moisture or wetness, which, however, suggests that it can be eliminated.

'I took a closer look at the problem yesterday. The squealing is coming from the pedal and the rear brakes. There's a pin on the brake pedal. I applied grease to it as best I could (it's hard to reach), but it seems to have helped. I drove into town briefly yesterday and there was no more squealing from the pedal, but the rear brakes are still squealing. Do I need to disassemble the brake drums to fix that?'

Do you mean a squealing sound that occurs the moment you take your foot off the brake?

To fix this, the drum must indeed be opened.
My 'drum brake'-equipped Golf had that problem too.

As Michael II already mentioned, I once had a similar issue with the clutch pedal. After several attempts (-> search function), the solution was to install a new bearing with some kind of Teflon material, which has been working perfectly without any squeaking ever since.

Okay, so, after I figured out how to access the drum, I sprayed some special spray from ATU between the plates. Now everything is working perfectly again .

According to atu, this is a common VW problem. He should have told me that I don't have to remove the wheel to open the drum *grr* so I spent 2 hours doing that .

.... My Jetta does that, my Golf2 did that, my father's Golf 3 did that, my wife's Polo did that, my 6N Polo and my 1Z also squeaked from the brake drum. Only my AXR doesn't do it... oh, I forgot, it has disc brakes all around .

After hearing so many squeaking cars, you simply filter out that braking noise (which is something humans don't want to hear...).

It took 2 hours for everything altogether. Half an hour of that was spent driving to ATU to look again in the repair manual to see how to unlock it.

Someday, I should buy a book for myself.

Okay, I think I understand now.

By the way, I would always remove the wheel beforehand. A brake drum is much more difficult to handle without the rim, and you don't need that long to remove the four wheel bolts...
