.... and then it cannot be started for approximately 3-5 minutes (all warning lights are on except the glow plug light), and after a while, the glow plug light comes on again, and then the engine can be started again, but then it happens again after an indefinite period (5-10 minutes). This is currently very frustrating because I never know when I will be stranded. (Skoda Octavia - First registration I/98 - Engine code AHF) Can anyone help me? Thank you! icon_confused.gif

Hi,

'I had similar problems that were caused by relay 109 (a cold solder joint). It was a known issue. This was eventually replaced by an improved version, which is identifiable by its gray casing (the old one had a black casing). Take a look at that and maybe you could try replacing it as a test.'
Otherwise: Have the error codes read.

Hi!

A faulty power supply relay 109 can register all sorts of errors, or even no error at all. This part costs around 10 euros. It's definitely worth trying a replacement, and since this relay is prone to failure, you'll likely have peace of mind even if it wasn't the actual problem.
Currently, everything points to R 109.

First, I would like to thank René and Uwe for their quick assistance. The tip that relay 109 was defective was spot on, and I also had an 'old' black relay installed.

I removed and disassembled relay 109 (as indicated in the original Skoda manual, it's labeled J322 in the wiring diagram and located on the auxiliary relay bracket in position 12). After an initial inspection that suggested a generally good condition, I decided to perform a repair. I cleaned the contacts with leather strips, resoldered the circuit board, applied two drops of sewing machine oil to the simple contact mechanism to ensure smooth operation, and thoroughly tested it electrically and mechanically. Finally, I reinstalled the relay.

Now I am driving again in the 2nd and 3rd lanes without having to worry about not reaching the right edge of the road in time icon_biggrin.gif.

Thank you again for the help and the opportunity to receive the necessary support in this forum.

Best regards to everyone.

Georg.

POSTSCRIPT:

After several days of trouble-free driving, and just to be on the safe side, I finally read the error memory.

*** The memory was empty and no errors were found! *** icon_biggrin.gif

Well, that's probably all for now, and I'd like to thank everyone who helped.

Best regards and have a nice weekend.

Georg.

Hello,

I probably have a similar problem with my Golf 3 AFN. icon_cry.gif
'Recently, my fuel tank ran empty (as I mentioned in a previous post), and since then, the engine has stalled five times (mostly while idling). I thought it might be due to air bubbles, etc. Each time the engine dies, it's extremely difficult to restart; it takes a lot of cranking before it finally catches.'
Today, I noticed that the car only doesn't start if the preheating light doesn't illuminate when I turn the key. Today, it lit up on the fifth attempt, and the car then started immediately.
Could it be due to the relay?

Yes, exactly.

For me, it was the opposite. When my 109 was defective, the preheating light came on, but wouldn't turn off. I also have a 1Z, maybe it's different there... icon_question.gif But swapping it out can't hurt (it only costs as much as 10 liters of diesel (today at the gas station in Hof/Saale, it's 99.9 cents/liter icon_eek.gif They're crazy...).

Hi,

For those who want to repair the 109 themselves, here's what it looks like from the inside:

It doesn't necessarily have to be the same contact person every time. Someone who can solder can save a few more euros icon_lol.gif.
