Hi there.
My friend bought a facelifted 1995 Passat 35i with a 1Z TDI engine.
It doesn't have a digital odometer like I'm used to; instead, it has a good old-fashioned mechanical odometer driven by a speedometer cable.
Now the question: Is this reading normal for this TDI engine, or does it indicate a problem somewhere between the potentially existing Hall sensor and the engine control unit (ECU)?
Unfortunately, I can't physically inspect the car myself, as it's located 400km away from me.
Thank you, Rüdi.

Hello, the TDI engine in the 35I has a speed sensor located on the transmission. It has 3 pins. There's a plastic piece inside that sometimes breaks off, or the sensor itself might be defective.
Best regards, Florian.

If it doesn't have a digital counter, the sender in the speedometer is responsible for displaying the speed.
