Rear Axle Noise: Causes and Solutions

When I pull the handbrake or press the brake pedal on my VW Bora TDI, something makes a cracking sound at the rear. This also happens when I manually push the rear shock absorbers.
What is that?

Is the spring in place? Otherwise, it will rub against the axle body.
