Hello,
A friend of mine came by a few days ago and said his car was broken.
I visited two workshops, and both said it was a turbocharger issue without really examining the car, mostly based on information from the office.

Symptoms: It starts normally, but after briefly accelerating, there's a large cloud of gray smoke coming out, it lacks power, and it consumes 2 liters of oil every 10 kilometers.

After a quick inspection, I noticed that the intercooler pipes are not excessively oily ---> Normal oil residue for a vehicle with 200,000 km (approximately 124,000 miles).

When you turn on the ignition, you hear a humming sound that resembles the noise of a fuel injection pump.
Normally, this only happens for a few seconds, but here it's not working anymore.

What do you think? Should I continue searching for a replacement turbocharger and disassemble it, or should I look for the fault elsewhere and read the error codes?
Unfortunately, I don't have the resources to read the data, and since it's the only BMW among my acquaintances, buying software isn't really worth it.

Regards,

EDIT: This is the 150 hp model.

With such high oil consumption, it could very well be the turbocharger. It's likely that the piston ring on the exhaust side has failed; you would see this when the downpipe is removed.

"Turbo junk!"
The wave has about 1 cm of clearance and can be moved both vertically and horizontally.

The engine is the standard model and the last 40,000 kilometers (approximately 25,000 miles) have been driven exclusively on highways.
I'm not sure what to do with "Danny-Tunning" right now.

That was an inside joke for particularly high-quality tuning. icon_cool.gif
However, in my opinion, there are multiple "Dannys," and not all of them are bad people.

Okay, let's continue.
The new turbo is installed and working properly.
I did everything that's normally required for a turbocharger replacement, including new hoses and drain, flushed the cooling system, and changed the oil.
The car runs and starts well, but when I try to drive it, there's a huge cloud of smoke behind me that makes it impossible to see anything.
The smoke definitely smells like diesel fuel, but it's not black; it's gray.

The humming sound, which is similar to or exactly like the sound of a fuel pump, is constantly present when I turn on the ignition and doesn't go away.
I've also noticed that the longer I leave the ignition on before starting the engine, the more smoke comes out of the exhaust when it starts.

Furthermore, when starting the engine quickly, there is no smoke at idle, but only when I am driving.

Does anyone have any ideas where I could start looking for the error?
Greetings.

Thank you, Rainer, for the explanation.icon_wink.gif
I only know bad Dannys icon_lol.gif.

I also icon_lol.gif, and the description sounds familiar, like a recent case from the BMW forum icon_rolleyes.gif icon_wink.gif.

Therefore, the question is icon_wink.gif.

As long as you drive at full throttle until the exhaust silencer glows, then it won't smoke anymore icon_lol.gif.

If oil is present in the silencer due to damage from the charging system, drill a few small holes at the bottom to allow it to drain. If the silencer isn't completely ruined, weld some points onto it afterward and that should be good. icon_smile.gif

'Hey, there's a filter in the breather housing of the 320d that was replaced at some point. Remove it, install a new oil separator, and it should be fine. I've had this same issue once on a 320d and once on a 310td. The cost is around €50, and installation takes about 15 minutes.'
The filters tend to clog over time, and usually it's due to a faulty valve that causes them to become completely blocked. I can find the part number for you starting Monday if you want.

Thank you for the tip.
I only cleaned it, but I think I'll probably replace it eventually.
I also took another look at the intake manifold and removed it again today to verschandeln it.
On Tuesday morning, everything will be assembled, and then I'll see if it's better.

I also took the exhaust pipe off today, and it's filled with oil as well.
What do you think is the best way to verschandeln it?
Flush it with the garden hose or pour in a liter of diesel and then use a lighter to see how much is inside. icon_lol.gif

The exhaust is now clear after burning off for 100 km =).
However, there is still one problem!
The car is not running at full power.
According to the popometer, it has approximately 90 horsepower. The turbo boost is missing at 1800 RPM and kicks in very gently around 2900 RPM.
The intake air ducts are all clear, and after the mass airflow sensor (MAF), it's not drawing in any additional air.
On the highway, I can reach a good speed of 190 km/h (but then I stopped). However, when going uphill, my speed quickly drops to 130 km/h even with the accelerator fully pressed.

Does anyone have any suggestions?
The error memory was also empty today when checked at the independent workshop.
Regards,

EDIT:
"Something someone who works at BMW just told me."
The particulate filter might be clogged with oil because it has removed so much soot.
He just says that you can get rid of it now.
Here, a lot is being talked about flushing, and is that still possible here as well?
