good day everyone - and a safe and happy 2012 to all of you!

I have a question that arises from the abundance of responses available online.

task: oil change.
goal: to maintain my Golf 4 (ALH). BJ 98 ~ 213.000 km) so LANGE wie möglich fahren zu können.
prehistory: I took over the car with 160,000 km, before that 10W 40 oil with the corresponding specification was used - during the last oil change, the workshop used a longlife oil 5W 30 (Aral Supertronic, VW specification 504 00/507 00). I also read that VW now recommends this for older engines as well.
observation:{Initially, there was a slightly higher oil loss than before.

and now the {QUESTION} question: based on your experience, is it better to keep this oil now (..not to change it constantly) or to reuse the previously used oil? or does it not matter?

best regards from

I would rather use a good 10W-40 oil for the engine with that mileage. Given the age and mileage, from my perspective, the most important thing is to have an oil that, due to its additives, prevents "crusting" and thus keeps your engine verschandeln and ensures proper lubrication inside.

Regarding our engine oils, a 10W-40 is actually not a problem, and the 5W-30, as you have already noticed, has a tendency to... (it's so thin that it works past the piston rings and gets burned). That doesn't hurt.

I believe that a good 10W-40 oil will provide you with more benefits as long as you stick to the recommended oil change intervals. Lubrication would be preferable, and compression could also benefit.

However, as I said, this is just my personal opinion.

Hi!

My wife actually drives almost the exact same Golf.
she drives a lot between Work,
and has achieved a mileage of 200 - 270 tkm in the last 3 years.
I use 5W-40 Liqui Moly.
This needs to be replaced every 15-20 thousand kilometers.
So far, there have been no problems.
and during the interval, approximately 2 liters need to be refilled.
Grüße, Steffen!

10W-40 is perfectly fine for the ALH. If he has many strong cold starts, then use a 5W-40.
Everything else is unnecessary, and will only make your wallet emptier. icon_wink.gif

Thank you, then I will do exactly that - 10W-40. It's not excessively cold in Mainz...

a pleasant evening.

Hi,

10W40 (13 Euro/5l) from my parts dealer, changed approximately 2 times per year (45Tkm), engine (1Z) had no significant oil consumption up to sale with 390Tkm.
Too much thought is given to oils. As long as the standard is in place: put it in icon_cool.gif
