hello

"I'm not a tuner myself and I don't have any interest in modifying cars, but I found the following information on Volvo tuning forums. Since the dual-mass flywheel (ZMS) is often an issue related to performance modifications, and I had this problem before because my car was chipped, I thought I would post it here:"

[The ZMS is equipped with welding beads and is therefore suitable for EMS (Electromagnetic Shielding).]

Apparently, it is available for purchase in Sweden and supposedly works.
Do you know what I mean? / Does this sound familiar?

It seems that the ZMS (presumably a component) is being welded to an EMS (another component) – a simple and effective method?

It's just a quick fix, nothing more.
Without further adjustments, it's unlikely there will be a reasonable workflow anymore. This has nothing to do with tuning.

Either you acquire the appropriate components, or you should just leave it alone.

It might be possible, but it could negatively affect the transmission noise, comfort, and lifespan.
It's important that "Schweißnacht" and "Dicke" are placed directly opposite each other.
It's more suited for extreme tuning without regard for comfort or longevity.
The clutch likely cannot handle the full tuned torque output; a racing clutch is necessary.

Thank you for the discussion.

Comfort is one thing, but what about durability? How does it work with a single-mass flywheel before the clutch? Was there some kind of vibration dampening somewhere in the powertrain?

Logically, a sprung clutch disc must be used, otherwise it will really damage the material.

That's correct! Some tuning clutches are actually sprung.
In the past, without a dual-mass flywheel (ZMS), clutches were sprung, and engines had significantly less torque. Also, thanks to swirl or pre-chamber technology, they ran much smoother than today's engines.

Quote:
Consequently, a cushioned clutch disc must be installed; otherwise, the material will suffer significant damage.

By connecting/welding the two flywheels together, the effective mass of the active flywheel (including the clutch) will almost double, and the torsional forces acting on the crankshaft will increase dramatically. Whether this will work well and for how long remains to be seen...
