Install Oxykat with Through Pipe

Due to its proximity to Berlin, I need to modify my Passat, as described in the signature. To do this, I first had to remove the old catalytic converter. This catalytic converter is a rare model with a straight-through pipe extending to the clamp on the rear muffler (originally installed with the engine).

"Normally, even after disconnecting the driveshaft on the transmission side, I couldn't get the 'thing' out from underneath. I could have either bent the pipe and then removed the rest from below, at the point where the driveshaft was disconnected from the transmission, or, as I did, I could have used my engine mount to lift the engine and remove the right-side transmission support."

Then there was enough space to expand the project. I thought that was quite significant, or maybe I'm mistaken. Tomorrow, I'm planning to go cycling, as that's enough for today.

How do you professionals handle it?

It's not unusual these days that you spend more time disassembling something than actually replacing the defective part.

Be glad it's not worse! With the Passat 3BG and its W8 engine, the entire engine has to be removed.

There are actually clamps available for all common pipe diameters that allow exhaust pipes to be joined end-to-end and screwed together. Often, aftermarket solutions for one-piece exhaust systems are designed so that only the damaged sections or individual silencers need to be cut at specific points. The replacement components, supplied as spare parts, are then attached and screwed together using the appropriate clamp system.

In all cases, you should check the specified cutting points and, if necessary, make your own adjustments. It's better to cut twice than to have to piece together a pipe that's too short. Sometimes, spare parts suppliers also include paper templates that are attached to the pipes with tape and clearly indicate the cutting points. Based on my experience, these templates are usually very accurate.
