Check the cables in the area of the tailgate opening, specifically the body connector (usually a rubber grommet). The plastic insulation becomes brittle, and then the individual strands of wire break off one by one. That would also explain the temporary contacts and interruptions.
I've experienced something similar with a Golf 4 MJ 99 before. The best solution is to replace the cable with a new piece, crimp or solder the connection, and insulate it with heat shrink tubing.
Even in a Golf 5 manufactured in 2007, I experienced the same issue with the driver's door (+ broken wire).
I don't think the Golf is built much differently than the Seat.
