Hello!

This weekend, I'd like to replace the timing belt on my 1998 Passat, 81 kW AFN engine. After removing the timing belt cover, I noticed that the area around the camshaft sprocket is quite oily - indicating a worn crankshaft seal.

My question is: Similar to the crankshaft and eccentric shaft, is there a key on the camshaft that fixes the camshaft sprocket in a specific position, or do I need to adjust the sprocket based on the markings provided for the valve timing?

Best regards from Austria.

Manuel.

Hi,
There's no shim there; otherwise, the valve timing wouldn't be adjustable.
Read that https://community.dieselschrauber.org/en/viewtopic.php?t=26323&highlight=nockenwelle+einstellen. for example.
Similarly, the newer ESPs do not have a wedge (or a tongue-and-groove combination).
Do you have a repair manual and the necessary tools?

Hello Herbert,

Thank you for your reply.
I have the centering pin and ruler for the Northwest (NW) area.

I still need to figure out a way to tighten the central bolt for the rear wheel.

What makes me a little uncertain now is:

Yesterday, I already tried to adjust the timing. To do this, I rotated the crank until the gauge fit into the NW slot. This worked, and in that position, the locking pin also slid into the EP wheel. However: The timing mark on the crank was not centered with the opening of the gearbox housing!

The marking consists of a 0 (zero) and a line on the swing. I assume the line should be centered on the opening?
In my case, the line is at the bottom edge of the opening (barely visible). Should I just leave it like that, or should I adjust it to be in the middle?

Best, Manuel.

This varies depending on the vehicle -- which vehicle, and what is the year of manufacture?

However, the approach is actually only suitable for finding the mark on the flywheel.

To determine the valve timing, first set the crankshaft to Top Dead Center (TDC). If it can still be adjusted from there, you are within the acceptable tolerances.

The reason you've exceeded the optimal timing (OT) despite the flywheel marking is due to belt elongation.

Roughly estimated, 3mm of movement on the flywheel corresponds to 1° KW, which is negligible.

The basic settings of the ESP (Electronic Stability Program) are then checked using VCDS.

He says it's a 1996 Passat with an AFN engine.
The question is, what does the inspection hole on the transmission bell housing look like: does it have a reference edge on the right side (clockwise), or is it marked with a triangle? If there's only a reference edge, then with a manual transmission, the "0" mark at top dead center (TDC) will be directly in front of that edge.
As I mentioned before, a frequently asked questions (FAQ) or "how-to" guide is always helpful, and the search function can also be useful.

Sorry, I missed that. It's a 1998 model, so a 3B. I've edited the title to reflect that.

The only question that remains is whether to choose a manual or an automatic transmission.
Possibly, there might be a marking on the front of the pulley (vibration damper). If so, the top dead center (TDC) mark should be easily found on the flywheel.

When in doubt, it's best to mark everything clearly, or later, perhaps like this: https://community.dieselschrauber.org/en/viewtopic.php?t=27173 drive with blue smoke. icon_wink.gif
