Painting or powder coating: Which is the right choice for the specific application?
The question arose for me when a motorcycle frame made of sheet steel needed repair. I would have normally painted it, but a neighbor pointed me to a powder coating company nearby. Fortunately, because until then I had only known powder coating as a plastic-like coating for cheap metal products, which is no longer the case.

From a visual perspective, I have to say that looking back, I wouldn't have been able to tell whether my parts were painted or powder-coated. The appearance of the powder-coated parts is top-notch. Different levels of gloss are possible (matte, satin, high gloss, etc.), and the coating is very durable. Powder coating is particularly suitable for highly stressed components, such as aluminum rims, steel rims, or chassis parts made of sheet steel.

Unfortunately, not all parts can be powder coated, as the coating is applied at a temperature of approximately 140°C - 200°C: Therefore, the item must be sufficiently heat-resistant; any plastic parts are therefore unsuitable. Below are the advantages and disadvantages of each method.

Painting

Advantages of painting/lacquering:
- Plastic parts or other components that are not heat-resistant can also be painted.
- Electrical conductivity is not a factor in the painting process.
- All colors possible (including custom mixes), airbrush designs, etc.
- "Body filler" on car body parts is not a problem.

Disadvantages of painting:

- Thick layers of paint can easily crack or peel off, but there are also supposedly special impact-resistant paints available.
- Nach der Lackierung muss der Lack trocknen bzw. aushärten (u.U. Days).

Powder coating

Advantages of powder coating:
- Powder coating adheres very well to metal surfaces.
- The coating is relatively resistant to chipping (e.g., from stone impacts).
- After the coating has been cured, the respective part can be used immediately (no drying time or similar is required).

Disadvantages of powder coating:
- Anything that deforms or melts at higher temperatures is not suitable.
- The item to be coated must be electrically conductive.
- Only colors can be applied without using the pull-down mechanism, and a powder is used for this purpose (usually RAL colors). Mixing colors is difficult, and gradients are unlikely to work well.
- "Putty" is a problem: Elaborate alternatives like soldering are necessary.

Hi!

Well-written; if I may offer a small comment on that:

With older steel rims, there's a small issue:
Specifically, the rim is made up of two parts: one part is the disc with the wheel mounting points, and the other is the outer ring where the tire sits.
There's a sort of gap or crack in between.

This is a common problem because there's likely air trapped inside the powder coating during the curing process, which expands, or it could be moisture.
Then small bubbles form, which sometimes burst.

The manager of the workshop for people with disabilities showed me that when I once wanted to have some steel rims powder-coated.
Some sensitive people might be bothered by that.
And that's why he shows it to everyone beforehand, so they can see what it might look like. He hadn't yet found a proper solution for that at the time.
Grüße, Steffen!
