Hello, experts.

I'm currently installing an AFN (presumably an engine management system) into a T3 (Volkswagen Transporter). The car is running well overall, aside from some initial issues, but the WFS 1 (presumably a diagnostic tool) is reporting error code 546 - "data line defect," subcode 27-00 - "implausible signal," which seems to be occurring without any noticeable effects.

I built my own wiring harness. The MSG (with no error codes) is located under the battery in the original position for the diesel T3. The WFS is located at the front, under the dashboard, with approximately 6 meters of cable in the main wiring harness connecting them, and it's bundled with all the other cables running to the front. Could there be some interference in the wiring? Could a shielded cable prevent this error?

Another option that just occurred to me is the reading coil, which currently has to function without a core of iron in the middle. The Toledo-WFS doesn't like the Polo-type reading coil that's installed, and I'm still missing the login or transponder for the Polo-WFS 1. Also, the iron core, which acts like a damper for the coil, is a factor.

Another possibility: I only installed the MSG (Modular System Gateway) and WFS (Windshield Washer Fluid System), activated only the speed limiter function in the MSG, and programmed a key for the WFS. Otherwise, both units are still in their original configuration. Could it be that the WFS is trying to communicate with a different control unit and is throwing an error because it can't connect? If so, what would the coding need to look like to satisfy the WFS? The donor vehicle was a '98 Toledo.

Do you have any other ideas or suggestions?

Smoky greetings.
Peter.

However, it should have been WFS II in 1998.

And a scan would not be bad. icon_wink.gif Not much will be in it, but then you can get an idea of what it is.

Hey there,

No, it's definitely WFS1, with the identifier 1H0-953-257-B, which is communicating with MSG 028-906-021-EF. The number 98 is from memory, and the donor and associated documents have been missing for quite some time.

"A direct read of the error memory in the MSG shows no errors, while the WFS only shows this one error. There are no other control units that can communicate. Last night, I thought the WFS error might have cleared itself after being turned off, but I need to verify that because it seems unlikely."

I could offer you the header information from the measurement block scans, which includes software versions and other details.

Here is the translation of the MSG:
;SW:028-906-021-EF HW: --- Engine
Component: 1.9L R4 EDC G01SG 1441, Code: 00002
Monday, September 23, 2013, 18:20:28:28035
VCDS Version: RKS 11.11.4 Data version: 20120807

Here is the WFS:
;SW:1H0-953-257-B HW: --- Immobilizer.
Component: IMMO VWZ3Z0W0000000 V00, Coding: 09600
Monday, September 23, 2013, 6:26:54 PM: 28035
VCDS Version: RKS 11.11.4 Data version: 20120807

I still need to find out if there are any further error messages from the control units, and if so, what they are. I hope this will give us a general idea of the problem.

Smoky greetings.
Peter.

Update: It seems the issue isn't just related to the cable, but also to the WFS (Wireless File System).

I switched from the coil 1H0-953-257B to the 6N0-953-157 (the Polo coil simply fits much better under the T3 trim), and since then, the error hasn't reappeared. With the 1H0 coil, it appeared quite reliably and, according to initial observations, didn't clear itself.

"However, I believe there's a design flaw in the cabling: In the original design, the W-line, which is used for communication between the WFS and the MSG, was simply running loose. I copied that design exactly. It would have been better if I had twisted it together with a ground wire."

Anyway, it seems to be working, and I really don't feel like taking the entire wiring harness apart to fix the problem, so I'm just going to leave it like this...

Smoky greetings.
Peter.

Hi Peter,
At this point, the MSG is not entirely happy, because the adaptation of the...
The initial amount has been adjusted to the maximum value.

Unfortunately, I can't tell you anything about the WFS because I've never experienced that problem.

Best regards,

Hi Micha,

"This was intentional on my part. The reason is that I'm using the T3 starter motor, which has one less tooth than the TDI starter. This causes the engine to rotate slightly slower during startup, which means it only starts after a bit of cranking with the original setting. However, by adjusting it to the maximum value, it starts immediately..."

Smoky greetings.
Peter.

Okay, then it fits.
