Hello forum.
I'm slowly starting to think about retiring my Ahu.
But where can you find products that offer similar reliability and durability?
I was thinking about the 2.0 TDI CR engine with 81 kW. It has significantly more torque than the 1.9 engine.
But compared to all other diesel engines, it offers a relatively favorable power-to-displacement and torque-to-power ratio.
Does anyone have any experience with this engine? Would you recommend it, either for a Golf or a Passat?
Thank you.

Hi,

Generally speaking, it seems like a good product based on what I've read so far. It shares many components with the more powerful versions. The only thing it lacks is the balancer module.

Due to the construction time, many vehicles still have the old differential pressure sensor 03G... installed, which will eventually fail. It's best to have a replacement on hand icon_wink.gif.

What do you mean by that?
Just like the 3.3-liter diesel Nissan Patrol? with 95 horsepower icon_wink.gif.
So, a lot of displacement with little power.

Personally, I don't think the engine is that great - it's a biased opinion, since I've never actually driven it.
Because: It was only produced for a very short time, and that's also why it's so rare.

I can't imagine owning a Passat 3C with only 110 horsepower; I often drive for longer distances, at higher speeds, and with heavier loads. (Okay, I admit, even the 140 TDI horsepower feels a bit underpowered for me.)

Actually, almost all Golf 3 Variant 1Z/AHU drivers have switched to a 140/170 HP 3C engine.

If you happen to find one at a good price... why not? But *I* personally wouldn't necessarily go looking for one.

Yes, I would prefer a 3-liter engine with 109 horsepower, like the one from Daimler icon_smile.gif.
110 horsepower is more than enough for my personal use icon_smile.gif. Actually, I don't really care how it drives. It just needs to be robust.
"I thought the engine was only offered for a short time because it was then replaced by the 1.6 TDI? And the 2.0-liter engine was only offered with power outputs from 120 hp to 170 hp, right?"
Or am I wrong about this?

"I drove it over 400 km on the highway. It drives really well, as long as the performance is sufficient. It's also quite drivable even with the smaller engines, with very little tendency to stall. It's not that rare either, because the smaller engines were bought disproportionately, especially in the Golf. Excluding the differential pressure sensor, which costs around 50€, it's absolutely robust."

According to several user opinions on MT (presumably a forum or website), the 1.6-liter engine is likely more fuel-efficient in the city, while the smaller 2.0-liter engine is supposedly more economical on the highway. However, the 2.0-liter engine doesn't have the excessive vibrations during cold starts that the 1.6-liter engine sometimes exhibits (at least with older software). I've driven the 1.6-liter engine before, and the vibrations were just annoying.

Hi!

I can also recommend this engine based on my driving experience. It's relatively quiet and has good torque. I can't comment on its robustness, as the sensor had to be replaced due to damage from a weasel. The fuel consumption in the Golf Plus is very economical on highways and country roads. It's a bit higher in city traffic, which is correct.

Why not a virtually indestructible 1.9 TDI with 105 horsepower?

It might even be more affordable, considering its age.
Compared to all the 2.0 models (mPD 140 hp, PPD 170 hp, and CR 140 hp) that I've driven, this one has incredible torque right from the bottom. Just put it in gear and make sure your neck muscles can handle it.

And he's also thrifty.

The 1.9 TDI engine with 105 horsepower is truly a great machine.
The 105 horsepower might sound like a small amount, but anyone who has ridden this machine will realize that there is more than enough power and torque.

It even gets the green environmental sticker and has relatively low fuel consumption.
The only downside, in my opinion, is the unavailability of the 6-speed transmission.

I think the 81 model in the 3C series is quite okay. I've often had it as a rental car. However, it only has a 5-speed transmission.

"To be honest, I don't see any advantage in terms of durability compared to the 140 model. However, in terms of performance, the 'smaller' one is perfectly fine, as long as you're not looking for extreme acceleration above 140 km/h."

"Definitely check if there's a working idle speed control system. I drove a Golf VI with a 110hp 2.0 TDI engine that simply stalled when trying to start from a standstill (on a straight road). As far as I know, this engine with this specific software/configuration was only available because Conti wasn't ready to launch the 1.6 TDI in time."

Hello.
I also considered the 1.9-liter engine with 105 hp, but unfortunately, I often hear reports of problems with the timing chain (NW) here. This was also mentioned in the Autobild long-term test. Is this a problem with a specific production series?
Thank you.

Hi, these are isolated cases, usually due to poor maintenance service, especially with the long-life oil. Otherwise, the engine is solid. However, nowadays, for the sake of performance, I would probably opt for a more powerful 2.0 CR (not the 81 kW version).

Hello.
Thanks for the information. Is it possible to determine this using the negative terminal (NW) somehow, or is it absolutely necessary to remove the valve cover?
Torque/power doesn't really matter to me; I just need it to be durable. The 1Z isn't exactly a rocket.

In the Golf, there's the 1.9 engine with 105 horsepower and a 6-speed transmission... do you have it? icon_smile.gif

And it, with its 1Z configuration, AFN nozzles, and "software" is a rocket!

Camshafts... I need to take a look at mine.

Well, but the original 90 horsepower isn't really that great.
A 105 hp engine with modifications should also work quite well.
Sure, I'd be happy to check it for you.
If you want to buy a car within the VW Group and your top priorities are affordability, fuel efficiency, and robustness, your selection will be quite limited. icon_sad.gif Was this also the case in the past?

Can this "idle speed control" be deactivated by the dealer?
I experienced it in my uncle's Fabia 1.6 TDI, and it was incredibly annoying to have to adjust to something like that after 10 years of driving TDI engines.
