Sticking Clutch Pedal: VW Golf G4 PD AXR Fix

Hi everyone,

'During the winter months (during periods of freezing temperatures), we experienced a problem with the G4 PD74kW AXR model, manufactured in 12/01, where the clutch pedal would not return to its original position after repeated use. After each press, it would remain slightly lower, until eventually it was no longer possible to shift gears.'
The problem was simply resolved by manually pulling the pedal back up. Since then, it has been working perfectly again.

I've already found some information using the search function, but it seems to refer to older models.

Since the weather has been above freezing, the problem hasn't reappeared. However, the car is going to the workshop anyway, so they should take a look at it while they're there.

Does anyone else experience similar problems, and perhaps know the cause? Is it possible that moisture got in somewhere and froze?

That sounds like there might be air in the hydraulic system to me. Doesn't the AXR have a hydraulically actuated clutch?

If bleeding the brakes doesn't work, then I suspect a faulty slave cylinder.
Actually, this quality issue should have been resolved by now within the Volkswagen Group. In my A3, manufactured in December 1996, I experienced this problem with the clutch slave cylinder, but it was replaced without any cost to me with an updated version.

What surprises me, however, is the connection with the low temperatures.

Yes, and not just him.

Once the problem starts, it doesn't go away easily!

An extremely damaged AXR driver...

It was the clutch master cylinder for me.
