Hello everyone,

I drive a Skoda Roomster, model year 2012, with a 1.6 TDI engine (77 kW, CAYC), and when towing a caravan (1050 kg), the coolant temperature quickly rises above 100°C (up to 110°C) when the outside temperature is above 26°C.

Is it possible to program the cooler fan (STG) using VCDS to lower the temperature sooner?

Thank you and best regards.
Rainer.

Hi,

In my opinion, it's only suitable for flat terrain; it's likely to struggle in hilly or mountainous areas.

First, you should check if you can optimize the cooling system (water cooler, intercooler) in any way. Some vehicles have sub-optimal cooling for aesthetic or other reasons that are not easily understood, and this would need to be examined in detail. Check what intercooler temperature you reach in the relevant load range when towing a caravan.

Take a look at the air ducting from the intercooler at the end of the following article, as such measures seem most sensible to me, provided there is anything to improve.
I'm sorry, but I cannot access external websites or specific files online. Therefore, I am unable to translate the text from the provided URL.

And:

According to SSP442, the main coolant pump and thermostat in your engine are mechanical. You could install a thermostat that opens a few degrees earlier.
I don't know if the control of the radiator fan can be changed using VCDS on your engine, but if it can, it should be possible to do so through the adaptation channels of the engine control unit. It may be necessary to enter a login/security access code of 12233 beforehand.

Best regards, Rainer.

Is the AHK (Automatic Headlight) factory-installed or an add-on?
Unless it's factory-installed, the heatsink and/or fan might be smaller than necessary!

"Well, I see it differently... My Golf 4 with the AXR engine handled that combination without any problems."
Since the Roomster is a hybrid between the G4 (Octavia 1) and the Polo 6N (Fabia 1), that shouldn't be a problem. The 1.6 TDI even has more torque than the 1.9.

Where should the problem be?
Up to 115°C, I would not object much with intact cooling systems.
By then, both my G4 (1.9L, 74kW) and my Octavia 2 (2.0L TDI, 110kW) had been sold.

Hi Bertil,

However, the AXR engine has a larger displacement and is therefore subjected to slightly less stress.
Of course, AXR and CAYC also go camping in the mountains with their caravans, but it always depends on which roads you take, how hot it is, and how quickly you want to get there.

Best regards, Rainer.

Hey, THANKS for the quick responses. icon_smile_thumb_up.gif

The AHK was already configured from the factory.

I have already improved the intake of cooling air by replacing it with a different grille (Fabia Monte Carlo) icon_confused.gif.

Yes, I know that 110°C is what it should be able to withstand, but I don't have to push it to its limits. The Roomy should last just as long as the Polo 1.9 TDI I had before (380,000 km icon_lol.gif).

We travel a lot with our campervan, and the Roomy is allowed to tow up to 1200 kg, which is still within my weight limit.

I think he no longer has a classic fan switch, which is why he's trying it via VCDS icon_redface.gif.

Thank you and best regards.

Rainer.

As I said, first, we need to log the intake air temperature, coolant temperature, and oil temperature while towing a caravan.

Best regards, Rainer.

OK.

Then, on the next trip with the caravan, I will log the charge air temperature and the water temperature icon_smile_thumb_up.gif.
The oil temperature is between 125 and 135°C, which, in my opinion, is already quite close to the maximum limit. I also change the oil every 10,000 km.
I probably have to admit that I often drive around 105 km/h with my car icon_rolleyes.gif.

Regards,

Rainer.

That would worry me more.
Does the Roomster not have an oil cooler or a water-oil heat exchanger?

The Roomy has an oil/water heat exchanger.

The oil temperature is okay up to 140°C, but after that, it becomes "thin" (less viscous).

Since I removed the oil pan insulation, the oil has been staying at those temperatures. icon_rolleyes.gif

Hello everyone,

Here's a quick update. icon_cool.gif

Unfortunately (or perhaps fortunately), the Roomster didn't get very warm during the last vacations, probably because the ambient temperatures didn't exceed 25°C. In the meantime, I received the update for the control unit and the flow straightener, so I'm not sure what impact it will have.

Regards,
Rainer.

This, in turn, would have the consequence that I could remove the EGR cooler from the water circuit. This should also have a positive effect on the temperature when operating the camper.

However, the AGR (Abgasrückführung) system is only active at low to medium engine load. This is likely to occur infrequently with your vehicle combination. Therefore, I believe your idea of using it to lower the temperature is not a viable solution.

I would, as others have mentioned here, first check...
- Optimize airflow.
- Log temperatures: LLT (Low Load Temperature), KW (Cooling Water), oil temperature under load.
- Does the thermostat work correctly? / Does it open fully?
- Check if larger sizes are available for the platform (there might be used ones available for a tighter budget).
- Check if a larger oil/gas-fired combined heat and power (CHP) system is available for the platform.

Where exactly does your problem occur at 25°C?
A) At 105 km/h on a flat highway.
B) At similar speeds on slight inclines.
C) Driving uphill at full throttle (50 km/h) for a longer distance.

Generally, option C) can sometimes lead to excessively high temperatures. Option A), on the other hand, should not cause this even at 25°C.

"In my Sharan/Galaxy, which weighs 1500-1700kg and has a towing capacity of 2000kg, I regularly manage to climb hills. First, the air conditioning compressor shuts off (initially noticeable by the smell of damp air), and then I take my foot off the accelerator. A few seconds later, the temperature gauge leaves the 90°C mark (thanks to the annoying plateau function!), and then you notice that the air also becomes warmer. This happens either on steeper mountain roads at 50-70 km/h when the ambient temperature is above 30°C, or sometimes at 40°C on the Brenner Pass at 80-100 km/h. On flat roads, this is not a problem even at 40°C and 100 km/h. I can live with that."

Greetings.
Guste.

Regarding the (very old) Audi 80 mentioned in the signature, coolant temperatures of 110°C were normal with approximately 1 ton of weight attached and 2 bicycles on the roof, when driving up the steeper sections of the Tauern Autobahn. At around 100 km/h in 4th gear, with some torque reserve, I made sure that the temperature didn't rise further. At 102°C, the thermostat should be fully open for that model, and the second stage of the radiator fan should activate between 99°C and 105°C.
It seems to me that the coolant values are normal, given the operating conditions.
Maintain a sufficient engine speed while driving (around 2000 rpm is good) to ensure the cooling system operates properly, and avoid letting the oil temperature exceed 120°C.
While modern engines may produce a lot of torque at low RPMs, the heat still needs to be dissipated from the engine.
I don't have any problems with the A4; the oil temperature briefly goes slightly above 110°. However, I'm also driving at a moderate engine speed.
