Post20-04-2018, 14:43    Subject: Camshaft Wear: New Part Failed Quickly? Quote

Hello, I'm having a problem with my Audi A4 B7 2.0 TDI (BPW) where the old camshaft was worn down on the valve #6, specifically the tip was gone. So, I replaced all the lifters, all the bearing shells, all the screws, and the camshaft with new parts from Kolbenschmidt. However, I just couldn't shake the feeling that something else might be wrong with the engine. So, I removed the valve cover, and what do you know? The cam lobe and lifter #6 show clear signs of scratching. What's curious is that I've looked at several similar cases, and almost always the cam lobe on cylinder #3 is worn. Is this a design flaw?

Does anyone have any ideas what the problem might be? Could it possibly be a valve issue? The lifter looks like it's being crushed between the valve and the camshaft lobe.

Before I start tearing things apart, I'd like to measure the oil pressure at the location of the oil pressure sensor first. Does anyone know what values I should expect under different conditions?

Hello,

Is the stopper still in place and sealing within the valve stem? If not, that's where your oil pressure is leaking out.

Best regards, Rainer.

Da ist ein Stopfen ? I didn't know that.
I just measured the oil pressure at the location of the oil pressure sensor while the engine was warm, specifically at 90 degrees Celsius.
The oil truck is in the...

Idle speed: 1 bar.

At 2000 revolutions per minute, the pressure is 3 bar.

At 3000 revolutions per minute (RPM), the pressure is 4.8 bar.

It seems everything is alright, or am I wrong?

I'm sorry, but I cannot access external websites or specific files online. Therefore, I am unable to translate the text from the provided URL.

Let's also check if the oil pressure increases appropriately at high engine speeds. How is the oil pump driven in your engine? Could something slip like with the hexagonal drive connected to the balancer shafts?
Edit: Seems I posted this too soon; the oil pressure appears to be okay!

Best regards, Rainer.

Have I understood correctly? If the oil pressure is correct, then it can't be that the stopper on the rocker arm is missing, right? Or could it still have fallen off and be related to this issue?

'People, the camshaft has gray marks and fine scratches on almost every lobe. Could this possibly be due to poor material quality?'

Try starting the engine briefly with an assistant, without the cylinder head cover. You can put something around it to catch any oil splatters and prevent a big mess.

If no oil is reaching the camshaft at all, then you've found the cause.

Best regards, Rainer.

I would start by checking the hexagon socket head cap screw on the oil pump and replacing it immediately. It's quite possible that the oil pressure was temporarily too low, which could have caused the problems in the cylinder head.

I thought the same thing. However, I've already removed the timing belt, camshaft, vacuum pump, etc. The fact is, when I removed the camshaft, there was oil in all the bearing journals. So, it seems like oil is actually getting to those areas. It's just possible that not enough oil is reaching them. I can't shake the feeling that the new camshaft might simply be poorly hardened. In most of the cases I found online, the 6th cam lobe is affected, which is exactly what happened in my case. So, it seems like there's a design flaw that causes the cam lobe to wear out prematurely for some reason. I'm wondering what would happen if the new shaft is so poorly made that it wears out immediately. Then there's the question of the bearing shells. I've been told that it's normal for them to look like mine after a short time. They say that with insufficient lubrication, proper grooves would form. Do you think there's any truth to that?

Hallo zusammen,

Sure, here is the translation of the text from German to English:

"LG" translates to "Best regards" or "Sincerely" in English. It is a common abbreviation used at the end of emails and letters.

Mal schauen was sich ergibt.

Moin,
