Hello everyone.
You might remember my issue with the fuel consumption, which has been ongoing for about 8,000 km, and I still haven't been able to fix it. I recently replaced the PD wiring harness and adjusted the PD injectors, and in the process, I found another problem – the camshaft seems to be starting to fail. (Specifically, the camshaft on the exhaust valve of cylinder 1).
Now, I searched the internet, and I came across this sentence:
https://www.ksmotorshop.com/article-detail/view/de/125687/nockenwellensatz-hv0338ks-kolbenschmidt-skoda-fabia-octavia-audi-a3-a4-a6-seat-ibiza-altea-vw-1-9pd-bxe-anu-2005
What do you think about this? Kolbenschmidt is a well-known company. However, the shop has Czech contact information. Do you think it's legitimate? Has anyone ordered from them before, or am I buying a cheap imitation here? The shop also sells on platforms like eBay, etc.
The alternative would be autoteile-direkt or something similar, also Kolbenschmidt at a similar price, but then I would have to put everything together individually. Amag (importer) is not an option for a student .
I would like to drive the car a bit longer, and since I'm already doing all this work with the camshaft replacement, it would be great if it wouldn't give up again after only 100,000 km. The last one, after all, had already run 365,000 km .
I am looking forward to your feedback .
Thank you in advance.
Tobias.

Hello,
Take a look at the post; apparently, the quality of the KS camshaft wasn't very high.
/viewtopic.php?t=30481
You might want to ask a local engine repair shop about alternative manufacturers. That way, if you have any problems, you'll have a direct contact person.
Since you're a student and on a budget, a used car with fewer kilometers (around 150,000 to 180,000) might also be a good option.
Tip
If you're not already using it, use an oil that meets the VW 50501 standard with PD approval, in a viscosity of 5W40.
They were recently developed/added due to the high stress on the northwest drive.
"The inexpensive 5W30 LL oils are often used on the Autobahn (German highway) and can quickly reach the temperature limit, especially in the summer."
Regards, Mpire.

Thank you for your reply.
It doesn't exactly sound encouraging when it comes to the KS camshaft .
I'm also not entirely happy with the idea of using a used camshaft, because it involves quite a bit of work to replace it (the engine is mounted longitudinally), and then you either have a used camshaft in new bearings, or a used camshaft in other used bearings, and neither of those options seems ideal to me.
Asking a mechanic for advice is a good tip, I will do that.
The alternative would be a used engine, which I could get for around 1200 Swiss Francs with approximately 160,000 km on it. However, I don't know what the inside looks like, or the condition of the PD elements, etc. (it's already been removed from the vehicle by the recycling company).
I have been using Shell Helix Longlife oil, which meets the VW specification 507.00, for approximately 120,000 km.
I never had any problems with the oil temperature, even in summer during mountain passes, it rarely exceeded 100°C. (Measured in the oil pan).
Has anyone replaced a camshaft that lasted a long time, and can you recommend a source? I'll still inquire about the original price, but I think it will be a four-digit amount...
Best regards, Tobias.

As I mentioned in another thread, you can often find used PD engines or engine parts at a reasonable price. A friend of mine paid 300 euros for a used BKC engine, including all its accessories.
I shot a BLS for 110 euros.

Prices in Switzerland are probably a bit higher. A new set of camshafts costs around 1500 Swiss Francs. I found a used engine with 160,000 km for 1200 Swiss Francs, and a cylinder head with camshaft (also with approximately 160,000 km) but without the PD elements for 400 Swiss Francs.
The Campro camshaft that I recommended earlier is quite expensive; I would probably have to order a set in Germany, which would cost around 600 euros.
Good advice is expensive, and engine parts in Switzerland are also expensive .
But it's still running, so I will definitely continue to keep an eye out. Any tips/suggestions are, of course, very welcome .

Does anyone have any experience with BTS Turbo parts?
According to my research, BTS Turbo has taken over the business of camshafts from Campro. Campro is mentioned and recommended in the link above, and it is also somewhat more expensive.
Now I've found this Campro set.
https://www.autoersatzteile.de/7706046-campro
Sure, here is the translation of the sentence "Sowie diesen Satz von BTS Turbo" from German to English:
"As well as this sentence from BTS Turbo."
https://www.pkwteile.ch/bts-turbo/13479514?&gshp=1&gclid=EAIaIQobChMIv7iIvNLb4AIVluF3Ch0q2A_hEAYYASABEgKQG_D_BwE&gclsrc=aw.ds
The BTS Turbo is significantly cheaper, and the part number is the same.
What do you think, is the quality the same? Is the price lower to enter the market, or have they compromised on quality?
Would you rather order the Campro or the BTS Turbo?
Various inquiries to engine repair specialists and car dealerships were unsuccessful, or financially uninteresting.
Best regards,
Tobias.

Is it possible to only buy spare parts from Switzerland, or could you potentially drive to Germany and buy them there for significantly cheaper?

Sure, that's possible, but I haven't found what I'm looking for in Germany either. I don't quite understand why, but many used engines that are being offered for sale have had the PD (Piezoinjektor) elements removed...
Furthermore, I've decided to only replace the camshaft because the rest of my engine is still in good condition.

PD components can be sold individually for a high price, and often, the money earned from shipping them is more than the price of a whole engine, which either has to be shipped via a costly freight company or picked up in person.
I'm lucky to live in the center of Germany, where, due to the proximity of the Volkswagen plant in Kassel, thousands of cars are scrapped, which creates a very competitive market and often results in low prices, especially if you're not in a hurry or desperate to find something specific.

Makes sense...
"Another question: Does the tandem pump absolutely have to be removed, or can the camshaft be "threaded in/out"? Is there anything to be aware of when disassembling the tandem pump? I also ordered a new gasket ."

I think I might have a solution in sight.
