Hello!

My father has a VW Jetta.
Year: 2006, 2.0 TFSI.
WVWZZZ1KZ6M, etc.

The car has a rear parking assist system with distance warning.
original factory condition.

He wants me to install something similar for him as well.

Can someone please provide some input on this?

Okay, so possible sources of supply,
various versions, designs, and configurations.
Installation effort, etc.
Grüße, Steffen!

I can't imagine you'll be able to avoid drilling into the front bumper. Otherwise, search for products on Amazon & Co. and evaluate them based on your needs.

Hi!

"Well, drilling wouldn't be a problem."
Taking the bumper off would be quite unpleasant for me.

But what scares me the most is having to disassemble half of the interior.

Hello Steffen,

I think we need a few more details.

Generally speaking, regarding parking assistance systems in VW vehicles: There are usually different control units. Either one for the rear only (4 channels) or one for the rear and front (8 channels). Additionally, there are control units for self-parking systems, which have extra channels on the front sides (and sometimes the rear) as well (10 or 12 channels). You first need to check which one is installed in your father's car (using a car scanner).

Back in the day, there were the simple beepers, and later, those with OPS (optical display in the radio). During the transition period, some people upgraded their beepers to OPS models. It would also be interesting to know what your father has now and what he might want to have later.

You will likely need the following:
- Buzzer for the front.
- Wiring harness
- likely a new storage device (alternatively, encode to more channels if a large one is installed).
- Bumper with buzzer mounting (for a few vehicles, there were repair kits where the buzzer mounting could be glued on. This could be checked again. Given the age of the vehicle, a matching bumper in the car's color might be relatively easy to find.)

Greetings.
Guste.

However, that would require an additional modification. If you don't want to do a quick and dirty job, it will take many hours of work for a proper installation.

Hi!

Yes, I could have described it more accurately.

So, the car is not self-parking.
Okay, so it's only about the distance warning systems.

The ones in the back are original, and there are 4 of them.
Nothing appears on the display.
It's only making a beeping sound from the left or right speaker.
It actually works very well.

The car has 90,000 km on the odometer, has never broken down, and still looks like it was brand new. Not a single scratch.

He's looking for an inexpensive solution that simply beeps when approaching the parking garage or parking lot, and that's it. It doesn't even need to come from the speakers.
He's turning 83 now, and he himself knows that it's not certain whether he'll still be driving in two years.

So, a major operation involving replacing the bumper and possibly the control units is not planned.
Grüße, Steffen!

I would advise against cheap solutions; I've personally wasted more time on them than the scrap was worth.
The WAECO MagicWatch has proven to be functional. I'm not sure if that was the case before, but I specifically looked for a solution where replacement sensors could be obtained if needed.
So, either as a replacement part or a complete kit that doesn't cost a fortune. It's a shame when a sensor dies after 5 years and you can't get a replacement, forcing you to replace everything.

Best regards, Rainer.

Hi!

I took a look at that thing you mentioned.
It's what my father imagines.
It's also reasonably priced.

If my father is no longer able or willing to drive, I would like to take over the car.
And I don't have a problem with that if it doesn't have eternal life.
I don't need something like that yet.

Please provide the German text you would like me to translate into English. I will then provide the translation without any explanations.

Waeco components have ultrasonic sensors.
There are also supposed to be radar sensors.

Does anyone know which is better, and what was originally installed in the Jetta (in the rear)?

The follow-up question isn't important; it's just out of curiosity, in case someone knows the answer right away. I could also look it up myself.
Grüße, Steffen!

Weiss jemand, was besser ist, und was in dem Jetta original (hinten) eingebaut ist?

Your car definitely has ultrasonic sensors. All the parking sensors I know of that are built-in use ultrasonic technology.

Radar sensors could be mounted invisibly (like the adaptive cruise control system, which was initially located behind the VW emblem). This would allow for a more elegant integration. I'm not sure if there are actually any vehicles currently using this technology. In any case, it's highly unlikely that vehicles manufactured in the year of yours would have it.

Regards,
Guste.

Make sure the front parking sensors are definitely switchable! On a friend's Touareg, parking sensors from China were retrofitted, both front and rear. The rear sensors were no problem, activating when reverse gear was engaged.

At the front, the clever Pole had connected the control unit to the ignition power, which also worked well during his test. If someone walks by in front, it beeps. However, it also beeps on the highway during heavy rain! icon_lol.gif

Hi!

Thank you for all the information.

What Rainer suggested somehow incorporates an input for the speed signal.

I'll need to take a look at the assembly instructions to see if it's something I can do and if it's suitable for that car.

I think that's enough for now.

Hello!
How time flies.
I've already installed the parking assist system.
This weekend, well, I took half the car apart, which was to be expected.

So, it's as suggested, it has become a Dometic MagicWatch 890.

It costs around 100 euros, it's very well-made, and I liked it. The included drilling tool for the bumper worked perfectly.
I was also able to install the sensors at the designated intervals and heights.

The very last thing I'll do tomorrow is attach the control panel and the buzzer.
and generate electricity inside the building.
I first got myself a plug with a switch, indicator light, and fuse for the cigarette lighter socket.
Everything else is ready; I even connected it temporarily, and the system is working.

The disadvantage at the moment is that the system shuts down every 30 seconds.
My father is okay with it, and he wants to go on vacation with it next week, so it will stay like that for now.

If you want to install it perfectly,
Is it possible to connect an output (assuming the cables are already connected) to the speed signal from the speedometer and the radio, as stated in the instructions?
But of course not in detail, as is typical for that type of vehicle...

Has anyone ever done something like that before?
Is there an easy way to do this, like pre-made connections available somewhere?

That would be the luxury option, if it's feasible.

But of course, I'm not going to disassemble half the dashboard because of that.
Then, I guess we'll just leave it as it is with the switch.
Grüße, Steffen!

Gibt es da eine einfache Möglichkeit, also irgendwo vorbereitete Anschlüsse?

I'm not sure which speed signal the Dometic MagicWatch 890 expects. It's probably not via CAN, but rather the older signal used for radios and other devices. It's likely that the parking assist system activates when the vehicle transitions from higher speeds to very low speeds.
In this case, an adapter that generates a speed signal ("speed pulse") from the comfort-CAN bus at the radio would likely be the simplest connection option.

Sure, here's the translation:

"LG" translates to "Best regards" or "Sincerely" in English.
