Hello everyone,
"Our tractor unit has recently been intermittently displaying a DPF error, but the error code is not showing up when we read the diagnostic data. I have attached the log file."
I measured the ash volume and the amount of residue, and it's actually below the limit.
Before we inspect the vehicle that is used regularly more closely on the lift, I still wanted to initiate a DPF regeneration. Unfortunately, I can't trigger the regeneration either through coding option 2 or through the access permissions. I searched the forum, but unfortunately, I couldn't find anything, as the instructions only go up to 3-liter engines.
If I have missed a relevant post, I apologize.
Does anyone have experience with this model, or can anyone offer me a helpful tip?
Thank you in advance.

Hello,
It's strange that there's nothing stored in the error memory. Could the vehicle have recently received a software update?
Background of my question: For years, the symbol indicating DPF regeneration never appeared on the instrument panel of my wife's A3.
After a software update, a stylized DPF (Diesel Particulate Filter) symbol occasionally appeared. Consulting the owner's manual revealed that one should simply continue driving until the regeneration process is complete. This eventually happened after driving for a while, and the symbol disappeared.
Is this the same effect (displaying a message to continue driving) and is there actually no real error?
Please post a picture of the warning light on the dashboard.
Best regards, Rainer.
PS: If anyone has information or experience with forced regeneration on the 4.2 TDI engine and can contribute, I would be very happy to receive a message so I can update the instructions accordingly! It will likely be similar to the procedure for the 3.0 TDI with EDC17.

Hello Rainer,
Thank you for the quick response.
It's completely baffling to us that no error code is stored. No updates have been performed, and nothing has been changed or repaired on the vehicle recently.
Unfortunately, the demo effect has occurred again, and the light is off. However, I would quickly take a picture of it as soon as it reappears. It's a direct indication of the particulate filter, so it's not the preheating or engine check light. I believe the owner's manual mentions it in the MMI.
Yes, and if anyone has information relevant to initiating the regeneration process, I would also be grateful.
Greetings.
Sebastian.

If the image is the one attached, I would interview the vehicle owner about their driving habits.
It's completely unclear why it happened to my wife's device, as it never occurred before the software update. It happened several times, and each time it disappeared after restarting the device.
No errors could be detected during the process. Furthermore, the issue did not reappear after driving several thousand more kilometers.
Perhaps the user's driving habits are the issue, and in recent days, they've been driving mostly short distances, so the engine hasn't reached its proper operating temperature. The thermostat is fine, and the engine warms up normally?
Approximately 25,000 km later, the EGR valve failed on the A3. It's possible that there were already smaller issues with it at that time, but they weren't significant enough to trigger an error message. Also, the thermostat has since been replaced.
Since the mileage is quite good, any connection is pure speculation.
Best regards, Rainer.

The symbol appears exactly as shown, but without any accompanying text or information.
The car is our towing vehicle. It drives 2 trips of 20km each day (and not gently), and additionally, at least 3 times a week with vehicle transport over 200km. The thermostat is working, yes. I haven't looked at the EGR valve yet. When towing, it regenerates occasionally, but the regeneration is always interrupted as soon as the destination is reached. That's why my idea was to initiate a regeneration before we start troubleshooting.

A towing vehicle always has a certain base load. Therefore, there shouldn't be any issues with regeneration.
Besides the engine itself making noise, it could be due to leaks in the cooling system or intake manifolds/hoses.
Here are some things you might want to check:

Hello, this symbol definitely indicates that a longer journey should be undertaken to complete the regeneration process. No error message is logged in the engine control unit. This usually happens with drivers who primarily make short trips. Once a certain level of soot buildup is reached, the engine check light will illuminate, and from that point on, regeneration can only be performed using a diagnostic program (which will also generate an error message).
I would start by conducting a test drive and continuing to observe. If the warning symbol appears frequently, I would thoroughly inspect the vehicle. It could potentially be a leak in the intercooler system. If a longer test drive doesn't help, or if a further engine check is also needed, I would advise against further driving (a short trip to the workshop would be acceptable). From that point on, the DPF can become overloaded very quickly, making regeneration impossible, which could pose a fire hazard.
Best regards,
Dago

I had a similar problem with my Golf. The soot level would quickly increase, and the DPF would start regeneration. If I drove gently, but not under load, the regeneration would decrease slightly, but never to the level it should have been. However, under load, the soot level would continue to rise, even during regeneration. I tested this multiple times.
The car went into regeneration mode, and I drove it under load until the DPF warning light illuminated. Then I stopped, and it completed the regeneration process while stationary, ensuring it was fully finished. Due to the lower differential pressure, it was then able to reach below 10mg and meet the threshold, causing the DPF warning light to disappear. There were also no error entries in the engine control unit. The calculation formula for the soot value seems to be dependent on the differential pressure. I repeated this process several times. However, in this particular case, the value seems to have increased so much that regeneration is no longer possible.
I've also checked everything. Leakage, differential pressure sensor, etc.
I would first check the oil level to see if it's elevated. This could be due to oil dilution in the regeneration process, which is a sign of a problem. My car has regenerated far too often.
It might be possible to reset the ash mass in the DPF (the new value would only change slightly). In my case, this also triggered a reset of the soot level, which was then measured and displayed as zero.
Then use VCDS and observe whether the calculated soot mass increases rapidly. Also, check the exhaust gas temperature, as this will quickly indicate when the regeneration process starts.
When the regeneration process starts, it sets the soot mass to the same value as calculated and initiates the regeneration. During a normal drive, it observes whether the calculated value returns to zero. If it doesn't, the DPF (Diesel Particulate Filter) is likely the problem.
If the system doesn't clean properly during a trip and the soot level reaches a value less than 10, it's possible that the DPF is clogged. That's what happened in my case, at least.
