Hello,
Occasionally, I receive questions regarding VCDS updates or firmware updates. This article aims to address these recurring issues.
Generally, when using VCDS and many other diagnostic software programs on Windows computers, the following types of problems can occur:
- During the software installation, parts of the installation package are skipped/deleted/quarantined.
The cause is usually an overly aggressive antivirus scanner that "removes" parts of the software. So, if certain files, usually .exe files, are missing, check for that. For these types of problems, I recommend using Windows Defender as your antivirus software. The virus scanner has been identified as a problem; reconfigure it accordingly or remove it (use Windows Defender). Install VCDS over the existing installation. - Problems with the network configuration, especially firewalls.
To update the firmware of a HEX-V2 or HEX-NET, certain ports on the internet must be accessible to the Ross-Tech servers. Check the corresponding messages from the firewall software, or inquire with (company IT) personnel to determine if the specified ports are accessible.
In some updates and with new features, VCDS not only updates the software installed on the PC, but also the firmware in the HEX-V2 or HEX-NET. To do this, the program VCIConfig.exe is used. I recently encountered a case with a customer where this program was missing (due to an antivirus scanner issue).
Some company IT systems are designed in a way that "hides" firewall or antivirus alerts, either to avoid alarming unsuspecting users or to conceal their own lack of competence. This is particularly frustrating because it's difficult to identify the root cause of these problems, and the programs simply don't behave as expected without any indication of what's being "prevented" in the background.
Good luck, Rainer.
