Leaky ESP: VP37 Injection Pump Repair

Yes, I've already read about it in the technical articles.
They are quite old by now.

Okay, so with my very old Golf 4...
Year: 1998, Engine: 1.9 TDI (ALH), Mileage: 335,000 km.
I noticed a diesel smell yesterday.

Checked it out today.
It comes from the area of the fuel injection pump.

I then started the engine.
It's the gasket located under the upper housing cover.
(which is where the older models used to have a cable-operated throttle).

It's not much yet, but it's not going to get any better.
I really need to do something about that.

Can someone provide me with some helpful information on this topic?
So, like, can I actually do this myself? What are the things I need to consider?

If the leak is only coming from the ESP cover, you can simply remove the cover and replace (or clean) the gasket underneath. Then, re-tighten the screws on the cover evenly. Bosch used to offer/still offers a gasket set for this purpose, which you can find online.

I have a 1Z ESP unit here with the part number Bosch 2 467 010 003 000, and it's partially used. I don't know if it will fit, but if you search using that part number, you should be able to find suppliers.

Note the fuel injection amount in control module (ECM) 1 at idle before proceeding.
Then, use a fine needle to make markings on the lid and the bottom piece.
Make sure the ball is aligned with the control valve during assembly.

Put it in 4th or 5th gear, engage the handbrake, apply the foot brake, release the clutch and start the engine. If it starts, you can then "stall" it.

Then, with the engine running, adjust the position of the control slide housing until the previously noted fuel injection amount is correct again. To do this, slightly loosen the cover screws and tap the housing gently with a hammer in the appropriate direction.

My suggestion is to have someone in the car who can quickly turn off the engine before it overrevs (because the quantity control valve may shift during a seal replacement).

The point machine doesn't move if you only loosen the cover screws. Seriously, even if the triangular screw is also loosened.

Just a quick update:
I haven't had the time yet.
My T4 had some issues during the technical inspection (TÜV), which I've been dealing with lately.

The part is no longer available at the Bosch service center.
I was able to order them today from the Volkswagen dealer, specifically from their Classic Parts department.
It takes a week.
That would then be a completely fabricated statement for the ESP system.
Individuality doesn't exist there.
No problem at all.
If you assume that more leaks are likely to occur soon,
I'll save the remaining seals for later.
