Post18-06-2003, 20:43    Subject: Car Door Unlock Sharan - Emergency Service Quote

The beginning:

It's hot and the sun is shining. Inside the Sharan are the 2-year-old son, the car keys, and the door is locked. Why? It's still a mystery.
What does the mother do? She naturally calls the emergency number of VAG...
Approximately 30 minutes later, the friendly technician arrives. (The drive is about 2-3 kilometers). Due to his extensive experience, he immediately knows that the window needs to be broken. That's why he only brought a hammer with him.
After the windshield has been shattered, he still can't reach the key inside the car. He says he needs to drive back to the dealership and get a wire.
Given that the children's oven seems unhealthy again after another 30 minutes of use, the mother of some present drivers retrieves an umbrella and manages to get the key herself, successfully.
The apprentice can leave now.

Now there's a hole in the car.

My wife called the VAG store. When she asked if there would be a charge for the 'emergency opening,' the friendly employee replied: 'No, there's no bill for emergencies like that.'

Der VAG-Meiser bietet an eine neue Scheibe zu bestellen. Accepted.
The mechanic calls to say the windshield will be ready for pickup this weekend. I tell him I'll pick it up myself and install it. There's disappointment in his voice, and he mentions that they could also read the error codes while they're at it. I point out that I've already done that, and we end the conversation.

Die Scheibe wird abgeholt und eingebaut. No comment.
Three days later, the post office delivered a bill for €47.68 for an emergency opening.

The subsequent correspondence and phone calls can be summarized as follows:
If we had had the windshield installed at the workshop, the emergency opening would have been free of charge. However, in that case, we would have had to pay for the installation itself.
This connection had not been pointed out before.

Now the question is:
Is this type of car door opening considered state-of-the-art? I once heard a renowned expert mention airbag technology for car doors. Are there any specifications from the Volkswagen Group (VAG) regarding this?

best regards

BERT.

hello,
Is this Sharan equipped with a key that opens the interior door handle? If so, there's a tool available to easily open the lock cylinder from the outside in seconds. I remember seeing several TV shows where a car like this was opened by a 10-year-old child. Does the dealer not know about this? Really knowledgeable.

Best regards,
Gerrit

Regarding your problem: That whole thing with the hammer was completely unnecessary.
A Volkswagen dealer should be able to open the car without causing any damage within 10-20 seconds.
The story speaks for itself, especially when it comes to the invoice.

Conclusion: Never leave your child alone in a car in the sun, and switch to a different Volkswagen dealer.
Please provide the German text you would like me to translate into English. I will then give you only the translation, without any explanations.

From your statement, I understand that you are advocating for leaving two-year-old children alone in a car in the sun?
That actually fits perfectly with the image that people are slowly getting of you. icon_evil.gif

Okay, now you can delete/change things and distort the facts as much as you want.
I am leaving this kindergarten.

Before a fundamental discussion about the topic of 'leaving a child in a car' breaks out:

Of course, the child was not left in the locked car. The child was properly loaded into the car after shopping, and the key was thrown onto the front seat. (I know you don't do things like that).
Nach schliessen der hinteren Tür war das KFZ verriegelt. Whatever the reason!

... nice, because such comments are completely nonsensical without any background knowledge on your part.

As you can read in Bert's explanation, it was an "accident," and something like that could happen to anyone, even you (Overfather). You were completely overreacting.

Calm down now, you were simply mistaken! I think it would also be a good idea to apologize to Bert.

By the way, there's a great software bug in the central locking system (with remote control and alarm): If you unlock the car with the remote control and don't open any of the doors, the alarm system will automatically re-lock the central locking after 45 seconds. So far so good. However, if you open the trunk to load something and leave the key inside the trunk (because it's in the way), the automatic door locking feature is NOT deactivated. If you now close the trunk, the entire car is locked with the alarm system activated, and your key is inside!
"The same thing happened to me. My daughter had crawled from the back seat, over the backrest, into the rear compartment (without opening the door), the trunk was closed, and the key was inside. There's no way to open the passenger compartment from the inside with the safety system activated. Luckily, I had a spare key in my wallet, so everything turned out okay. I can't imagine how funny it would be if I had to rely on roadside assistance."

Furthermore, there were various Opel models where closing the trunk would automatically lock the central locking system, even if the ignition key was still in the ignition switch.

Such mishaps happen all the time.

On my 5-year-old Golf 4, the automatic door locking deactivates after 45 seconds if you open the trunk or any of the doors. It also works for the trunk; I tested it specifically to make sure I'm not making things up.

Okay, here's the procedure: Unlock the car using the remote control, open the tailgate, close the tailgate, wait for 45 seconds: nothing happens.

Perhaps this can be adjusted somewhere using VAG-Com in the Comfort Control Unit for Electrical Systems?

Do you have an alarm system? Only then will the automatic locking feature work! And according to Volkswagen (Wolfsburg), it's actually a software error.

Hello Bertil,

At VW, the remote key always comes with an alarm system. Previously, this was part of a technology package (including MFA, alarm, and remote key), but now the remote keys and alarm system are standard equipment, at least in the Golf Highline and Comfortline models.
However, an alarm system with interior monitoring comes at an additional cost, but that only covers the interior monitoring feature.
Mine is still one of the older models, but with the technology package. I also have an alarm system - it used to go off every night for a while (why only at night?!), because there was something wrong with the lock on the rear right side.

'I'm sure this can be adjusted in the VW settings. They supposedly (though I'm not entirely certain) have options to configure whether a single press of the button only opens the driver's door, or if it opens all doors, or even if a single press opens all doors, along with other such features...'

Perhaps only the older cars have a control unit that is working correctly; it's possible. But if it were just a software error, wouldn't they update the software during the inspection? Or doesn't Volkswagen do that?

Stefan.

Hi Kenny,

kenny wrote:
This can definitely be adjusted at a VW dealership,...

no, it is not possible. VW speaks of a software error, while the ECU manufacturer considers it a safety feature. icon_rolleyes.gif
It's the same situation as with unlocking the car doors via the remote central locking system. It was possible in older Audi A3 models, but not in the Golf 4, even though it didn't have complex electronics.
Quote:

They might (supposedly, I'm not entirely sure) have a setting that controls whether pressing the button once only opens the driver's door, or if pressing it twice opens all the doors, or even if pressing it once opens all the doors, along with other fancy features...

"That's possible; it's called individual door opening, and it's even mentioned in the building documentation."

Okay, so at least the automatic relocking after 30 seconds is now the default setting.
That's because ALL vehicles with Force Feedback (FFB) do that, regardless of whether the alarm is active or not.

and the bug that prevented the trunk from disabling this function seems to be fixed, because my Octavia, like the Passat, keeps the trunk open after it's opened.

The automatic locking function during driving, as well as the individual door opening feature, are described in the user manual, with the note: 'The dealer can activate this feature upon request.'

However, the automatic relocking function cannot be disabled.

Hello!

'This has happened to me twice now: with my 2002 96PD G4 SE, after unlocking it with the remote key fob and opening a door (any door), when closing the door, the car locks automatically and the alarm is triggered.'
I had placed the key on the passenger seat along with a few shopping bags.
Since then, two keys have always been included.

I'll try provoking it next time to see if the phenomenon also occurs with the key in the ignition.

Regards...

Could it be that the contact in the door lock is defective or was defective, which also triggers the interior light to turn on when the door is opened? This happened to me, and suddenly the key was in the car and the doors were locked... icon_redface.gif
