I checked the injection timing on a friend's car using VAG Com and found a significant exceedance of the upper tolerance limit. Here are the vehicle details:

SEAT Ibiza, AFN engine, 96,000 km, timing belt replaced at 90,000 km.

The value for the start of injection (2) is 80..
The value for the fuel temperature (9) is 160.

He then went to the friendly mechanic and described the problem, requesting a correction of the settings. After 45 minutes, he received his car back with the explanation that the issue was related to the timing belt. We then re-checked the fuel injection timing and couldn't detect any changes. Subsequently, we returned to the dealership with a laptop, VAG Com, and tables to prove that nothing had changed. The mechanic then retrieved his manual for the AFN engine and showed me that the values of display fields 2 and 9 were within the acceptable range. He reacted unprofessionally, referring to the above characteristic curve, and said that such information wasn't in his manual and wasn't relevant to him. How should my friend proceed? Is the current setting acceptable, or should something be done about it? How can he prove to the mechanic that the pump is still not correctly adjusted?

Hi.

As far as I know, the diagram shown here is correct, and the settings you mentioned are indeed quite inaccurate.
In that case, the values cannot simultaneously be within the acceptable range according to the mechanic's guide – unless he actually has a different (or a specially fabricated icon_twisted.gif) chart for your specific situation.

I would like to request another look at the guide (which has already been shown to you - not many workshops do this) and go over the matter again, explaining it as if to a first-grader new_tomato.gif.

Good luck with that...

Um, a question:
Is this just about theory? Does your car not perform as well as it used to?

Sorry for the silly questions, but as a reader, it's not entirely clear to me... icon_rolleyes.gif

The problem is that his guide doesn't have a corresponding diagram. He only showed me that the values are located in...

Display field 2 0..88

and

Display field 9 91..201

He was allowed to work on it, but he didn't understand that the values had to create a certain harmony in the diagram. He only saw that the individual values were correct, which he was right about. But the two values in combination... that probably exceeded his level of expertise. It's frustrating dealing with people who try to fix things without understanding them.

@DocSnydor:

This isn't a theory, it's reality. The engine is actually running quite well and smoothly. I checked the injection timing without any particular suspicion, and I came to this conclusion. How would such a setting manifest itself during driving?

The value you have is really far off from the rest in the diagram... icon_confused.gif
'Once, my car's value was close to the lower tolerance limit. At that point, I noticeably had too little power, which resulted in an excessively high fuel consumption...'
Do your settings and the workshop's settings both originate from the 'default settings mode,' right?

Hi DocSnydor,

Did you encounter an error message (specifically, "start of spraying, regulatory difference") because of this?

@DocSnydor:

I think that will be it! We obviously didn't activate the 'Basic Settings'. new_all_coholic.gif Please don't throw stones at me! icon_lol.gif I'll try it with that tomorrow.

I think the problem can be solved as follows:
Standard diagnostic tools (such as VAG 1551 and VAS 5051, commonly used in VW workshops) allow for the display of data blocks. These include things like temperatures, signals from the mass airflow sensor, fuel injection amounts, and so on. This provides accurate and traceable values. For example, temperature values typically fall within a logical range, such as xxx-xxx°C. Therefore, it's impossible for the fuel temperature, for instance, to be 160°C.

On the other hand, the tester provides 'encrypted' numbers that actually need to be decrypted if you want to know their true meaning. For example, this happens when you call up the 'Basic Settings' program. Here, you can actually find a value of 160 for the fuel temperature, but this does not necessarily mean 160°C.
I now need to read these encrypted values into the injection diagram and can then determine whether everything is within the expected range.
However, if I enter the actual (correct) numbers into the chart, I arrive at incorrect conclusions.
'Recently, I had to explain to a Skoda dealership (same engine) that you absolutely must go into the 'Basic Settings' program when checking the injection timing. In this case, however, the car had a significant loss of power in that area after the timing belt was replaced.'

I think the problem lies with you: either the workshop or you were working with different software programs.

Best regards, Lanz.

@haehnlein
I don't know icon_redface.gif.
When I had the white smoke on startup and the very low power, I quickly checked the injection timing using a diagram. The result confirmed my fear that my 1Z engine was affected by the loose crankshaft bolt. That's why I immediately went to Bosch... They then installed a new electronic control unit (ECU) because I also wanted to get rid of the annoying jerking.

@SeatLeon
No problem, it can happen. It's easy to overlook something like that icon_wink.gif.
