Hello,
Can someone explain the turbocharger boost pressure to me? I often see values like 0.3 bar, which seems less than atmospheric pressure. And in movies like 2Fast2Furious, they show values like 1.5 bar.
It would be great if I finally knew that! icon_rolleyes.gif

Hello,

How did you manage to complete the registration? icon_rolleyes.gif
There are two ways to measure boost pressure: absolute pressure or pressure relative to atmospheric pressure.
0.3 bar absolute = -0.7 bar relative.
1.1 bar absolute = 0.1 bar relative.
2.0 bar absolute = 1.0 bar relative.
TDIs have a relative boost pressure ranging from 0.9 bar (90 hp, engine code 1Z) to 1.5 bar (150 hp, ARL).

In some movies, a lot is shown.

I'd like to wrap up this topic now.

Okay, thanks for the quick reply.

Even if you would like to end the topic, how do you mean that? How did you manage to achieve the regulations? icon_question.gif icon_question.gif

I think I finally get it!
So, if 0.3 bar is 'relative,' meaning 1.3 bar absolute, that actually makes more sense.

Hi Avenga,

"If a movie shows a turbocharger with a boost pressure of 1.5 bar (I'm assuming this is relative, meaning above atmospheric pressure), that's not a lot. Many (gasoline) turbocharged engines I've seen in racing applications have significantly more boost! In England, various tuners run their Cosworth turbo engines with up to 4 bar and well over 500 horsepower."
