Hello,

I've already discussed this topic further down, but I would like to hear some other opinions on it.

'I've been experiencing a power loss in my Golf IV TDI AHF for some time now, which cannot be explained by normal means, and my VW workshop hasn't been able to find a solution. I would like to purchase a diagnostic tool to log detailed data blocks. Since I don't own a laptop, I would need to buy a used one. It will likely cost under €200.'
In addition to that, there are also the costs for the connector.
The other option is to purchase an original VW diagnostic tool from eBay. Buy it Now price is €295.

It would be great if you could provide me with a recommendation, as I also want to invest in something sensible given these amounts. Thank you in advance.
Greetings.
Jean.

Hi,

My recommendation: keep an eye out for deals at stores like MediaMarkt, Lidl, and Aldi, and if you find a laptop with a serial port on sale for €800, grab it.
You get a 2-year warranty, and it's also more enjoyable to use in bed or in the garden with a nice, cold beer than it is at your desk.
Build the most basic version of the adapter (or have a fit friend build it for you).

With a bit of luck, the adapter/laptop/car combination will work, and you can download the shareware version of VAG-COM for free.
If the basic version doesn't work, throw it away (the effort required depends on how careful you are, but it's roughly around 15 minutes). Depending on your skill level, you can either build a decent one yourself or buy a ready-made adapter.

"It's difficult to observe adjustment processes with the VAG part. With VAG-COM, you can log data in the registered version (and create nice graphs from it)."

Best regards, Rainer.

'... and read the measured values in plain text, not as cryptic values like with the VAG tester!'
