Politicians from the SPD and Green parties advocate for higher diesel taxes.
Berlin (Reuters) - Representatives of the Green Party and the SPD have called for a significant increase in the mineral oil tax on diesel fuel. Federal Environment Minister Jürgen Trittin (Greens) announced that he would advocate for stricter emission standards for diesel vehicles.
'The tax reduction on diesel fuel costs the state a loss of six billion euros per year and does not make sense from an environmental perspective,' said Antje Hermenau, a financial expert for the Green Party, in an interview with 'Bild am Sonntag.' Hermann Scheer, a member of the SPD executive board, called for a gradual increase in the mineral oil tax on diesel in the newspaper, until the price reaches that of regular gasoline.
'The exhaust fumes from diesel cars are 20 times more carcinogenic than those from gasoline cars,' said Hermenau. She proposed a phased plan over five years for...
'The taxes on diesel should be increased until the price of diesel and gasoline at the pump are equal.' This would save more than one billion euros each year. Scheer argued that a higher diesel price would force a shift to biofuels. 'By reducing the tax, we are rewarding the inertia of industry and consumers in sticking with an extremely environmentally damaging fuel.'
Environment Minister Trittin told the magazine 'Automobilwoche' that he had initiated efforts to tighten EU emission limits for particulate matter and nitrogen oxides in diesel engines for cars and trucks. According to the proposals of the Federal Environment Agency, on which Trittin based his plans, a future Euro 5 standard should reduce the particle limit for diesel cars to just 0.0025 grams per kilometer, the magazine reported. This would be ten times less than under the Euro 4 standard, which came into effect in 2005. Trittin is calling for the introduction of the Euro 5 standard by at least 2010. The magazine quoted an expert who said that to achieve this level, the industry would have no choice but to use particulate filters.
According to the information provided, diesel cars now account for 40 percent of new passenger car registrations in Germany. The Federal Environment Agency has criticized that the resulting increase in pollutant emissions further increases the risk of cancer. According to one study, the use of particulate filters leads to an extension of the life expectancy of all people in Germany by one to three months.

If they increase the fuel price, they must lower the taxes!
But I think it's just a summer filler article because the politicians can't come up with anything meaningful anymore!
But why sue? After all, the current government was also elected by the people!
You can't just sue after you choose; that's not how it works!
Actually, four years of traffic light coalition government should have taught them enough, but apparently Germans are really just stupid herd animals!
However, HJS has now developed a retrofit particulate filter that is designed to last for 250,000 km without maintenance. With this, you can easily achieve the required values, which would actually entitle you to a tax reduction again!
Unfortunately, the link only shows a truck particulate filter; I haven't been able to find anything more recent.

Sorry, but where is this going to lead? / Where is this heading?
It's getting worse and worse. Always against drivers, which means always against ordinary people, because they need cars. They have to drive every day to work (I, for example, drive 100 km every day). Now, the mileage allowance has also been eliminated. I'm starting to get really fed up with it. I feel so angry inside!!!
If that were to actually happen, I would switch to heating oil without hesitation. It doesn't matter to me at all. The chance of being checked is just as low as winning the lottery...
Ich würde mir gerne ein neues sparsames und umweltfreundliches Auto zulegen, aber wie soll ich das finanzieren. Am Ende des Monats bleibt ja immer weniger vom Geld. A vicious cycle.
Sooner or later, I will definitely turn my back on this country if things continue like this, and it will probably be sooner rather than later.

@DocSnydor
Your mileage allowance hasn't disappeared. Don't worry! This only applies to commutes to work of up to 20 km! You're way over that limit with your 50 km commute!

Manuel.

Yeah, yeah, the principle is so simple once you understand it:
1. Today's society would completely collapse without individual mobility (which is a rather pessimistic starting point).
2. Therefore, one can make a significant and practically unlimited profit from this individual mobility sector.
People might give up smoking and drinking if it became too expensive, but almost everyone who doesn't live in a major city with truly good public transportation options needs to drive a car.
3. The anticipated public outrage regarding the price gouging must be addressed through reasoned arguments.
Here, environmental protection is used as an excuse – the motto being "Driving cars harms the environment, so the bad driver must be punished" – through measures like pollution taxes, etc. And thus, the majority of Germans, who are authority-oriented and environmentally conscious, mostly remain silent out of a sense of guilt. The Green Party will eventually ruin the German economy again. This pack of idiots and fanatics should be punished for every action they take.

Hello!
I couldn't help but feel a certain amount of annoyance.
Basically, I also believe that we should strive to reduce substances that are particularly harmful to health, even if it requires the use of legal measures.
But...
'To this day, I have not heard of any scientific evidence that definitively proves that the particles emitted by modern diesel vehicles can cause cancer.'
2. I believe that the higher soot content of diesel engines, compared to gasoline engines, is already taken into account in the vehicle tax system.
3. If the goal is to efficiently reduce particle emissions, my first thought would be to promote the use of particulate filters, either by offering tax breaks for consumers or by enacting legislation that requires manufacturers to install them.
Increasing the mineral oil tax seems to serve ecological goals only superficially; it appears that the true motivation is more likely related to increasing government revenue.
But I have to agree with my predecessors: We wanted it this way, and by the next election, all of this will be forgotten!
Happy Sunday...

I'm only using biodiesel now. It always costs a consistent 75 cents per liter here. I haven't had any problems with it either. They also guarantee top quality.

It's always the same story: during elections, the major parties make promises, but then fail to keep any of them. Furthermore, there hasn't been a single Chancellor in Germany who has treated his/her citizens with respect.
'No one has lied as much as the current [person/leader]. Let's wait for the next elections; I'm willing to bet on it.'
I wouldn't be surprised if the Red-Green coalition comes up with something again before the election to appease the people. I can only hope that the informed voters won't make the same mistake for the next eight years.
forgot.

... and that the competition doesn't appoint someone again whose primary interest is Bavaria, and then perhaps (but only very possibly) benefits the rest of the Republic .

Hi Marco,
As long as there are only voters who = 1 , the red-green coalition really has nothing to fear: 2 other incumbents are enough . Gruß Ulf

Sorry, but where is this supposed to lead???
It's getting worse and worse. Always against drivers, so always against ordinary people, because they need cars. They have to drive every day for work (I, for example, drive 100 km every day).
Conversely, thanks to truck tolls and potentially higher diesel prices, I hope for a shift of truck transport onto the railways... yes, yes, I know that if there are no more trucks, there will be less of everything. Nonsense. Maybe it will please the logistics companies to have more work to do again.
I read that there have been so many truck accidents in one African country that now it's only allowed for trucks to travel a route if one end of the route is a train station. Doesn't that make sense?
As for me (I was also driving almost 280 km per day until yesterday, totaling nearly 200,000 km in the last 3.5 years), I feel somehow responsible... this can't continue like this.
I feel sorry for the truck drivers, mainly because their jobs are at risk. But on the other hand, I don't see why we should subsidize coal miners so they can ruin their health, and truck drivers aren't in much better shape either.
Regards,
Felix.
