Golf TDI Engine Noise: Causes & Fixes

'I have a Golf SDI, model year 1996, with the AEY engine. At an engine speed of 2400 RPM, I'm experiencing a loud rumbling/throbbing noise. The exhaust system, including the flexible section, is already new. I've also replaced the air filter, and the exhaust gas recirculation system has been deactivated. Does anyone have experience with the AEY engine, or any ideas about where this rumbling might be coming from?'

It's not just my Caddy that does this, but also the other vehicles in the company fleet. The car drives like a typical Eastern Bloc car."

As a supplement to that, everything is fine with me again, except for some very slight vibrations.
Apparently, everything had to be sorted out and put back in order.
I can imagine that even in standard production cars, tinkering with the exhaust system might have an effect. It might be worth trying to test it without an exhaust system (this only applies to turbocharged engines; on naturally aspirated engines, it would probably sound like World War III).
