Hello everyone,

Today, I'm having a problem: I drive a Golf IV with an ASZ (96kW TDI) engine. I parked the car in the garage two weeks ago because of the weather; I didn't need to use it. Today, this happened: I wanted to wash the car (it was very dusty from sitting), and when I tried to start it, all the lights went out.
That's probably it for the first battery, and that's in the summer after thirteen months. I generally only drive long distances; it's rare for me to drive less than 100 km at a time. I didn't leave the lights on, nor the radio. Could the interior monitoring system drain a 70Ah battery? Could the navigation system do that (original VW MFD, which was definitely turned off and automatically turns off after 1 hour)?
"Could you give me some advice? Should I try to get a replacement battery from VW under warranty, or would it be better to just buy an aftermarket battery? I've heard that those are supposed to be really good."
I haven't installed or had anything installed afterwards, could it be that something is wrong with the electrical system?

Matthias.

How long do your batteries typically last? This is the first one I've had fail in my car's lifetime. Is it worth recharging if it's already dead in the summer?

Hello,

The batteries should actually last longer, especially when used for long distances.
I would definitely contact VAG and request a replacement part, as well as a free measurement of the idle current.

Hello, the original battery in my Passat (manufactured in March 1998) is still in there. (135,000 km)

And it works perfectly fine to stay longer than 3 weeks! It would be quite something: 3 weeks in Mallorca and then straight to the airport ---> completely drained!

I would also like to file a complaint about that.

Good luck.

"The original battery in my A3, manufactured in December 1996, is still working. So far, I haven't had any problems. Hopefully, it will last through the upcoming winter."

Alex.

The interior lighting has a significant power output, but I had mine on one night.

By the way, the battery in my 12/95 1Z G3 is still the original one that came from the factory!

I still can't believe it, even with the increased short trips and heated seats.

Hello,
'In my car (manufactured in 1997, 110 HP TDI, engine code AFN, mileage = 130,000 km), the original battery is still working reliably. However, it's important not to forget to check the fluid level occasionally and top it up with distilled water if necessary.'
Last month, the original battery in my wife's car (Ford Fiesta, year 1997, mileage = 60,000 km) suddenly failed. According to the seller of the new Varta battery, the acid density in one of the six cells was abnormally low, which he claimed was a perfectly normal phenomenon (?!).
Und dann ?Please provide the text you would like me to translate from German to English.
Greetings.

Hi,
My first battery lasted about 6 or 8 years, but the second one failed after less than a year and was replaced under warranty.
Harmful factors for lead-acid batteries include overcharging (due to a faulty alternator regulator), vibration caused by poor mounting, and generally, every discharge and recharge cycle. During these cycles, the plates change volume and eventually begin to crumble.

Worked at Volkswagen.

The battery is maintenance-free and has the great "magic eye" indicator. It was completely black, so everything seemed okay. Unfortunately, it was completely discharged. The experienced mechanic couldn't explain it and immediately replaced it with a new one (even a larger one...). Then he realized that the larger battery wouldn't fit in the battery compartment. So, he's now looking for a new one, and I have a loaner car because of the battery, which isn't bad, right? The new battery will be here tomorrow, and then everything will be okay. The resting current measurement was within the normal range, and apparently, the alternator regulator might need to be replaced. I don't think they'll actually do that, but everyone was very friendly and helpful, and things moved quickly. Besides, I think the loaner car is a generous gesture (or is it normal when they don't have the spare part?). The loaner car is a 140hp A3 TDI, and I have to say, the car is amazing, but somehow, the 140hp TDI isn't faster than my 130hp one. It pulls much more smoothly, but that initial surge of power from mine is just so nice... Okay, I just wanted to thank you all for your answers!

Matthias.

Great magical eye. It was a deep black color, so everything is okay.

I know the "Magical Eye" in deep black as "DEAD".

Normally (==OK), it should have a gift-green shimmer.

Or are there now different eyes???

I've only seen this with windshield wipers; they turn yellow when it's time to replace them.
It's new, and it's black.

Or is that something completely different, and am I completely wrong icon_wink.gif?

Best regards,
Karsten.
