The AMS (presumably a car show or event) displayed the various engine options that will be available.

According to this, the SDI (presumably a specific feature or technology) will not be available at the initial launch, but later on.

'So, it says '2.0 SDI' there, so are we expecting a PD SDI with 4 valves?'

Hi,

PD and SD (push and pull) probably don't go together, do they?

I hope they offer the R5 2.5L TDI engine with a timing chain instead of a timing belt, 400 Nm of torque, and a DSG gearbox. That would be my ideal Golf V.

Is it okay to dream about that, does anyone know more?

Greetings,

Marcus.

Hi!

Why wouldn't a Pump Deno injection system work without a turbocharger (SD)?

Hello Frank,

'The SD doesn't have a turbo, so why use a PD diesel engine with high-pressure injection?'

Given that PD technology is also so expensive, I don't think something like that will be included in the low-cost SDI engine. I believe that all four-cylinder engines for the Golf V and the new Passat will use the same 2.0-liter block, and this change is based on a modular design approach.

VW may also be attempting to meet the EU4 standard with the SDI engine by using an injection system that has been improved with PD technology.

I don't really care, though, because SDI isn't my area of expertise.

Greetings,

Marcus.

The older SDI engine also had the same injection system as the 90hp TDI with the VP37, and that wasn't too expensive either.

Since all TDIs will likely become PD engines soon, it might be just as cost-effective for VW to also design the SDI as a PD engine.

Injecting diesel fuel under high pressure would offer the same benefits in an SDI engine as it does in a TDI engine (cleaner combustion, better efficiency). Of course, the power output would be reduced because the amount of fuel that can be injected is correspondingly lower (less air). However, the SDI engine also tends to consume less fuel, at least compared to the 68 hp SDI and the 110 hp TDI that I have both driven for extended periods.

@Nuckelpinne_72

'The SD doesn't have a turbocharger, so what's the point of using a PD diesel engine with high-pressure injection?'

I once learned that the higher the injection pressure, the finer the atomization, and consequently, the cleaner the combustion.

Best regards, WarLord.

@Warlord

Okay, convinced. Then the new SDI could potentially be very fuel-efficient.

The diesel range would then look like this in the V'er:

Certainly.

2.0L SDI, 75 hp, 5-speed.
1,9L PD TDI, 8V, 105PS, 6-Gang o. GDPR.
2,0L PD TDI, 16V, 140 PS, 6-Gang o. GDPR.

Perhaps:

2,5L R5 TDI, 8V, 175PS, 400NM, 6-Gang o. GDPR.
2,5L R5 TDI, 16V, 225PS, 4XXNM, 6-Gang o. GDPR.

That R5 engine, with its massive torque, would be amazing in such a small car.

Greetings,

Marcus.
