Combo instrument Golf IV PD

Hello everyone!

First of all: I'm new here and would like to know if you can help me.

I drive a Golf IV PD TDI (originally 74kW, now 92kW due to tuning). Since the car is from 2002, it still has the 'old' dashboard. However, I would now like to have the 'new' dashboard installed (the one with the instruments framed in chrome rings) (I don't know the article numbers for both; I don't have a parts list), but there seem to be problems. So, I went to the workshop today and asked if such a conversion would be possible. The answer was quite shocking. While it is possible, the problem is that VW only makes this replacement part 'very difficult to obtain' (quote from the parts guy), because the immobilizer and the entire dashboard system depend on it. When he then quoted the price, I was already at my wit's end. Can it really be that a combination instrument like this costs around 380€ (including VAT)? Firstly, I can't afford to spend that much money on it, and secondly, I find the price very questionable. My question is: Does anyone know where I can get one of these combination instruments and also have it installed and functioning? Please don't misunderstand me, I am not looking for any cheap or even stolen goods, but I cannot see paying over 700 DM for it.

Have you ever asked at a reputable tuning shop if it's possible to attach the rings retroactively?
So, that's how I did it (e.g., around €35 at Milotec), maybe the ones for the Octavia will fit in the Golf...
And by the way: the €380 for the van is already a bargain!!!

der preis klingt für mich ganz normal. ist ja auch etwas elektronik drin...

[Translating...]Also 380€ finde ich noch normal.Allerdings würde ich aufpassen beim abklemmen des Kombigerätes. So wie ich gehört habe muß bei vielen neueren VW-Modellen nach dem abklemmen das Steuergerät neu eingestellt werden. Also Vorsicht!!!!

@TDI-Fahrer: Zu meinem großen Bedauern muss ich sagen, dass ich auch gehört habe, dass es möglich ist, dass das Steuergerät neu eingestellt werden muss. Insofern fällt die ganze Aktion wohl flach, da ich befürchte, dass es Probleme mit dem modifizierten Steuergerät gibt. Es muss nämlich nicht grade sein, dass die Herren beim Einstellen des Steuergerätes die Einstellungen von *** überspielen, modifizieren oder gott-weiß-was damit anstellen. Normalerweise sollte nichts passieren, aber das Risiko ist mir zu groß. Am Ende verträgt sich irgendwas nicht und dann steh ich - im wahrsten Sinne des Wortes - da.

[Translating...]Was umgestellt werden muß hängt mit der Kodierung der WFS zusammen oder mit den Signalen für CAN etc.
Da man das Umkodieren kann liegt es wohl nicht in den ROMs sondern in einem extra Speicherbereich.
Die werden an den Kennfeldern für die Einspritzung nichts ändern damit man ein Kombiinstrument tauschen kann!

[Translating...]bei den Kombiinstrumenten muss man folgendes unterscheiden:
bis 05.99-> kein CAN-Bus erkennbar an TN 1J0 919 ...
ab 05.99 CAN-Bus -> TN 1J0 920 ...
1J0 = Standard-KI
1J5 = KI mit Chromringen
ab Modelljahr 01 wurde die WFS von Immobilizer II auf Im. III umgestellt, die WFS sind untereinander NICHT kompatibel, ab MJ 01 gibt es aber keine Probleme
dann ist noch die Frage, ob eine MFA drin ist, wenn ja, welche (Highline oder Midline) und ob es ein Benziner oder Diesel ist.
Ein Tauch ist also mit dem RICHTIGEN KI kein Problem, bei einem bekannten Auktionshaus gibt es die Tachos für ~150€, allerdings ohne Gewährleistung
Beim Freundlichen ist man mit 450-550€ dabei, zusätzlich müssen die Daten noch ausgelesen werden und auf das neue KI überspielt werden (Service,...), ebenso muss man die Schlüssel anpassen (lassen).
Bis zu einem original KM-Stand von 100 im KI kann die Werkstatt (oder per OBD-Software) den KM-Stand anpassen, danach geht es nicht mehr.
