Hello everyone,
Today, I had the chance to take a short drive in a Golf 4 Variant Syncro with a 96 kW PD engine.
The thing weighs just under 1.5 tons when empty (if I remember correctly), and in 2nd and 3rd gear, it gave me a surprisingly strong feeling of pressure on the seat – subjectively, at least as much as my 1.1-ton "lightweight" car, which also has about 96 kW.
Perhaps I also experienced the turbo lag, which persisted up to almost 2000 rpm, followed by a sudden surge of power.
. . . but I still wonder if, like with Bertil's AXR, PDs actually come with a "normal" and significant performance boost, and I would like to check some real-world values in the DZR.
I have verified data regarding the weight and specifications of the 96 kW PD engine in the Ibiza.
According to the DZR (German tuning magazine), the 2-door car, without significant modifications, should reach from 2000 to 4000 rpm in approximately 6.6 seconds in 3rd gear (full throttle from around 1300 rpm, time measured from 2000 to 4000 rpm).
If we were to get some practical experience now, we could estimate the average over- or under-performance based on the relationship between calculated and actual time.
So, who can stop the Ibiza (just using a clock ) and post the time here? Gruß Ulf

Can it also be from a Passat? I also have the quite accurate weight!

Sure, including the exact starting speed at 2000 rpm (or gear ratios and tire size), it's definitely possible to compare the theoretical and actual times! Gruß Ulf

... um, I think you might be mistaken... my AXR already weighs 1500 kg (1395 kg according to the registration document) - so the 4Motion will definitely weigh at least 100 kg more than my AXR - therefore, I would estimate that an all-wheel-drive "luxury" car would weigh around 1600 kg.

That's amazing... right?

I'm curious to see what comes out of this. Gruß Bertil

Hi Ulf,
Take a look at the Ibiza forum (www.ibiza-forum.de) and search for... the Ulf test . I posted it there once, and while some people didn't understand it all, a few definitely tried it. A particularly insightful thread might be one where I discussed performance issues with "Vestibular" - in that thread, others posted times just under 6 seconds.
*search*
http://www.ibiza-forum.de/forum/thread.php?threadid=6121&sid=&threadview=0&hilight=durchzugstest&hilightuser=0&page=1
It's a very long text, but it likely contains a lot of information about the 96 KW Ibi topic, even though many of the contributions are far from the high standard usually found here.
Best regards,

Hi Jan,
Thank you for the link!
What I read there (in part) ultimately motivated me to write a guide on data center relocation.
I will post this as a technical article and will refer to it in the Ibiza forum. Gruß Ulf

*gg* I'm probably not "pig-headed" enough for that (my name isn't Bill G****, after all).
Furthermore, I would have to fairly share the Mammon, at least with Ernst S. - whether it would still be worth it then . Gruß Ulf

Hi,
The questions that sometimes come from "over there" can be quite frustrating, especially when they concern things that are obviously very straightforward.
However, there are a few people who really know what they're talking about or have good ideas, but unfortunately, that's more the exception than the rule, which is why I rarely participate or contribute.
Best regards,

To finally contribute something to this discussion with a specific time:
6.4 seconds (3rd gear, 2000-4000 RPM).
This value is the average of over 10 manually timed measurements for my Ibiza, manufactured in February 2003. The standard deviation is 0.13452. The measurements were taken under different conditions, with temperatures ranging from approximately 19°C to 26°C, and with the fuel tank ranging from full to nearly empty! As I mentioned, the time indicated is the average of all these measurements!
I'm unfortunately unable to give you the exact weight right now, but I'll try to find a way to weigh it on a vehicle scale sometime in the next few days. Hopefully, this will be helpful to someone!
I hope I've been helpful...
See you, Chris.

Hi Chris,
Sure, thanks!
6.4 seconds is quite good and could indicate a further, plausible performance increase of around 5%. I've already taken some times from the thread in the Ibza forum, but yours (without tuning, or??) was still missing. Gruß Ulf

Hello!
So, a friend of mine and I took the test several times today. His 96kW PD Ibiza took an average of 6.3 seconds. The car is completely stock. Subjectively, I felt the acceleration was significantly better than in my Ibiza 6K with an 81kW TDI, but the stopwatch showed a surprising result. My Ibiza, with its original AFN engine and 17-inch wheels, only needs 0.1 seconds more on average. I wouldn't have expected that; you can really be mistaken about these things.
For comparison, my father's original 35i Passat, with a 1Z engine, takes approximately 9.5 seconds, but I only tested it once, so that's a bit inaccurate. All tests were conducted with two people in the car.
Best regards, Dr. B.

Hi,
That wasn't a deception: In your car, approximately 2000-4000 rpm likely corresponds to the usual speed range of 50-100 km/h, while in a 96kW Ibiza, it would be around 55-110 km/h.
So, the 6L builds up 10% more speed in practically the same amount of time, which simply means approximately 10% better acceleration.
What's different: What is the year of manufacture / first registration of your friend's 6L?
6.3 seconds with two people is quite impressive, assuming it was measured correctly.
I'm trying to get a small statistic on construction years and additional performance. Gruß Ulf

Hello,
Switching from 15-inch wheels to 17-inch wheels also means that my speedometer now displays a minimum of 5 km/h too low, which translates to 55-105 km/h, and likely even more.
The Ibiza is from the end of 2002, and in a direct comparison, it doesn't feel significantly faster to me, at least not noticeably. I know it's supposed to be better, but the difference between subjective acceleration and reality is quite large, and I honestly didn't expect it to be that much. It's surprising how much one can be misled.
Best regards, Dr. B.

Hi,
Are you driving on the rims, or do you still have tires on ?
The rim size is approximately as important for the actual rolling circumference of the tires (and therefore for the overall gear ratio rpm-> km/h) as the diameter of the brake discs.
Enter your tire size into the DZR's speed calculation sheet, comparing it to the factory tire size. Then you'll see what has changed (or not) in terms of "V at 2000 rpm". Gruß Ulf

Hello Diesel Mechanic Forum, I also own a 96kW Ibiza (with 6000 km on the clock), but it feels a bit sluggish. I haven't been able to do a dyno test yet (due to a lack of suitable roads), but according to the GPS, the top speed on the highway is only 197 km/h, which I think is a bit low.
So, I mentioned it to a workshop foreman, and he said that a TDI engine needs to be 'broken in.' However, since my car hasn't gotten any faster from 2,000 km to 6,000 km, I'm not really inclined to believe him.
What do you think I should do?
