Hello everyone!
I'm at my wit's end with my turbocharged diesel car.
It all started very suddenly; when idling, it runs very erratically and has a strong...
Smoke is coming out, and it's not starting very well either.
With the choke engaged, it runs smoothly again and the smoke decreases.
The consumption has also increased.
I checked the fuel injectors, and they can withstand 200 bar of pressure.
and the spray pattern is also quite good.
I noticed that one of the injectors is clogged with soot.
Could it be that the fuel injection pump is defective?
It's a 1993 Volkswagen Golf3 GTD 1.9.
I would be grateful for any help.

Best regards.

How about the crankshaft bolt?

Best regards, WarLord.

Have you checked the compression yet?
I would rule out the pump as the cause.

I also think it's the crankshaft bolt.

This is also suggested by the fact that it runs better with a cold start accelerator (i.e., advanced timing).

Hello everyone.

First of all, thank you for the tips!
Can you really adjust anything on the crankshaft bolt? I assume you can.
'I'm talking about the screw that's on the timing belt pulley.'
Is this not secured by a wedge? If not, please correct me if I'm wrong.
I can probably understand it better if I look at the camshaft, because that's where the timing belt pulley is located.
secured to the wave only by the screw.
Why is an injector nozzle black?
I'll measure the compression tomorrow.

Best regards,

The screw on the crankshaft is known to sometimes come loose (due to insufficient strength). As a result, the timing belt pulley starts to deform and eventually breaks.
Then the pulley will twist, and the timing will be thrown off. If things go really wrong, it can cause total engine damage.

My motorcycle mechanic recently worked on a vehicle that had the exact same problem.

Search the forum for the famous screw...

Hey everyone.
Great help from you all.
It seems like the screw is causing the pulley to wobble.
I read somewhere on a forum that there's a company in Hamburg that can machine the shaft while it's still installed.
Does anyone happen to have the exact address?
I'll start by checking the timing tomorrow and then I'll take everything apart.
Does anyone have any other tips on what I should be aware of?

Best regards.

Hello,

warm oder kalt? Wenn kalt, dann Glühkerzen/Streifensicherung/Relais/Leitung usw. checken. If it's hot: oh dear...

Cold: see above. Warm as well? It really sounds like a KW screw. More details about this: http://home.arcor.de/sgrafen/salatoel/kw_schraube/kw_schraube.html

200 bar is far too much. The factory setting is 155 bar.

While doing this, I noticed that one injector nozzle is clogged with soot.

Then, a thermal insulation gasket was leaking (these small pieces that sit in the bores in the cylinder head and are supposed to protect the nozzle from combustion chamber temperatures). In this case, the nozzle got too hot and seized, which can cause the described symptoms. You must always replace these thermal insulation gaskets when reinstalling the nozzle holders.

Probably not.

Excellent!!!!!!!
So, the crankshaft bolt was definitely the problem.
He's purring again like a kitten; he had completely forgotten how to do it.
However, the wave had suffered quite a bit of damage and must have taken about an hour to repair with a file.
Approximately only half of the key in the gear wheel remained.
The new one probably still has 1-1.5 mm of play; the notch in the shaft is that worn out.
Everything's messed up again, let's see how long this lasts?????
And now, addressing you all, please continue like this.
Great board, highly recommended. I would never have found that error.

See you soon.
