Mazda Performance Issues: Air Temp Sensor Problems

Hello to all forum readers,
After replacing the mass airflow sensor (MAF) in my Mazda 626 diesel due to a loss of power, the problem of reduced power and increased fuel consumption persists, despite no error codes being displayed.

Now the vehicle is back in the workshop.
Just now, I received a call saying that the temperature sensor is defective and will be replaced.
I won't know for sure if this solves the problem until tomorrow, as the part still needs to be ordered.

Now, my question for the experts: Can a faulty temperature sensor explain a significant loss of power and increased diesel consumption?
If so, why? Unfortunately, I haven't been able to find much information about the exact function of the temperature sensor, although I suspect it's an air temperature sensor, because the cockpit display showing the cooling temperature has always worked fine.

Of course, that's possible. For example, some diesel engines from the Volkswagen Group use two sensors (one for the engine and one for the instrument cluster), but they are housed together in a single unit.

If the engine sensor only indicates a very low temperature, the engine is running rich and may be limited in power output. This means full load operation is not possible, but fuel consumption will be extremely high under partial load conditions.

No, air conditioning isn't necessary... it can't possibly be cold enough in here.

But you'll find something about coolant temperature sensors.
